Cromwell land grants
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 03:43 GMT (UK) »

A contentious issue!

Can anyone assist me on the notion that Cromwell gave land grants to his troops?

Is there any list of names of troops who may have received a land grant?

He most certainly did.
If you do a google or Bing search on "Ireland Cromwell land grants", you will find plenty of info.

He gave land to the Goff family who then moved to Waterford.  He also wiped out the original Wexford population and restocked from the mainland so a lot of today's Wexford people are descent from the land grants.

Crabby, are you looking for any name in particular?

Try Google Books: The Irish and Anglo Irish Landed Gentry: When Cromwell came to Ireland or a supplement to Irish Pedigrees by John O'Hart. Originally published 1884.
Around about page 415 you will find a list titled Soldiers of the Commonwealth in Ireland.

You might find what you are looking for there.

I am looking for information on the name Gore or sometimes spelt Gower, and I would also be interested in any lists for land grants that people come across.

Good morning Katherine

Crabby, are you looking for any name in particular?

Try Google Books:

I am looking for the Family EDMONDS from whom I may be descended.

This could be the line -
Richard Henry EDMONDS b c1790
married
Catherine FURLONG b April 1793

one of their sons was named-
George Gilbert EDMONDS - b 1825-1830 d 1906
He is my great grandfather and he is buried near where I live.

Thank you for your interest

If anyone has a copy of this book ... can you look on page 414 and list anyone with the surname: EYRE please?  Naturally, the page I need in Google books isn't in the preview.

Although, there are some listed on page 384 for the "49 Officers".
Eyre: Co. Kilkenny/Co. Wexford, Ireland
Bradley: Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
Christie: Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
Thompson: W. Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Taylor: Woodbury, Litchfield Co., CT -> Manhattan, NY
Wood: Delevin, MN -> Greene, NY -> Bergen, NJ
