William (Edward) Flutter
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 20:36 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to help my daughter in law trace her family history. It's proving difficult as she has little information on her grt. grandfather who emigrated to South Africa sometime prior to 1907 when his first? child was born.

His name on his son's birth certificate is William Edward Flutter. He died South Africa in 1938. She hasn't yet found his age when he died or where he's buried.

I've found a William Flutter (father John) b. Windlesham, Surrey 1875 on the 1881/1891 census, then nothing. I think this is the one on Ancestry Service Records who enlisted in the Army Service Corps in 1893, and was discharged in 1905. He served in South Africa.

I have found the birth registrations of some of his siblings, and their middle names are included, but not William's.

I would be very grateful if anyone is able to look at the baptisms from 1875 for the Windlesham, Godalming area.

Many thanks.
Doreen

Who was the mother of the 1907 child?

Would it be Lizzie Louisa?

sadly the Windlesham (Chertsey District) PRs in the IGI have only been extracted up to Dec 1874, so a physical search will need to be performed.

Godalming is a a lot further south, the other side of Guildford.

Thankyou Pauline and Mort for the replies.

I'm going a bit ga ga  with this at present.

Cyril William Flutter was born Cape Town 5 May 1907. Parents: William Edward and Charlotte Eleanor. Sadly, no maiden name for the mother.

The William Flutter who enlisted in 1st Nov.1893 gave his age as 18 years and 10 months, indicating a birth in early 1875. The only one I found is the William George, but he is from a different family.

If I have the correct William in the 1881/1891 census his father was John, who was widowed by this time. Going back using the eldest brother George, the mother's name was Emma.  George was christened 24 April 1864 at Godalming.

A William Flutter born 18 Oct. 1876 at Chertsey has parents John Flutter and Emma Waller (think), but need to check this surname as I can't find a marriage.
As William (in the army) gives his next of kin as father John, Chertsey, Surrey, he must have told a little white lie when he enlisted!

This is the only William Flutter I can't account for after the 1891 census, apart from the service records. But no mention of Edward as a middle name.

Thanks for any help.
Regards,
Doreen

Is there any reason to think that Cyril's father/parents came to South Africa from the UK? I can't see any suitable emigration in the outbound passenger records available on www.findmypast.co.uk.

No evidence other than what has been passed down the family line, which I know can be suspect.
I had looked at the emigrations, but not at all sure as to how complete they are. I do thank you for looking though. All and any suggestions are welcome.

I have suggested to Andrea that she tries the South Africa board as without some further information on William in South Africa there isn't much point in researching in England until we know when William (Edward) was born.
Thank you to those who tried to help, it is very much appreciated.
