It didn't - Stretton on Fosse is in Gloucestershire, Stretton under Fosse is in Warwickshire.

According to the web page of St Peter's Church in Stretton on Fosse (or alternatively, Stretton-on-Fosse), 'Stretton is between Warwickshire and Gloucestershire. It is actually in the county of Warwickshire but the postal address is Gloucestershire!'. It appears on Hugh Wallis's IGI site under Gloucestershire with baptism & marriage records between 1538 and 1895. There is a Stretton under Fosse  in Warwickshire,(baptisms 1787 - 1837) as well as a Stretton on Dunsmore (baptisms & marriages 1742 - 1895) but no mention of a Stretton on Fosse. This becomes confusing when faced with a record  'born Stretton ....'.

Now I understand - sorry ignore Stretton under Fosse, it is miles away from your Stretton.  I have similar problems with many of my ancestors who lived on the Warwickshire/Leicestershire border and even some who didn't know whether they were in Warwickhire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire or Derbyshire!

I think you may find that the issue is that the Ecclesiastical Parish boundary and the Civil Parish boundary for Stretton were not the same. In other words the Church of England did not necessarily follow the geographic county borders.  We have a lot of examples of this in Warwickshire.  Perhaps the Gloucestershire FHS can advise.

Hundreds of people have been confused over the years by the three Strettons in Warwickshire.
A couple of years ago I was in Stretton under Fosse (near Brinklow) when a lorry driver stopped to ask for directions.
The address he wanted to deliver his package was actually Stretton on Fosse (near Moreton) and 31 miles away !!  ;D
All counties -Brightley, Brightwell; Cambridgeshire - Peggs; Staffordshire / Derbyshire - Hollis, Myatt, Kidd; Birmingham / West Midlands - Woolley, Harley; Warwickshire - Warren; Oxfordshire - Golby/ Goldby, Ashmore; Herefordshire - Harley
