A plaque on a NZ beach *COMPLETED*
« on: Thursday 04 February 10 02:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello All.

I guess this will seem crazy, please forgive me.

I have been told by a relative that the brothers of my g grandmother had a plaque erected on a New Zealand beach when they took part in a rescue.

The location of the beach is unknown but I think it may be in the South Island.
Names with connection are Timaru, Waimate and Hokittka.

Unfortunately there is nothing else I can add.
Just maybe - if it has not fallen down there may be a sign.

Their names are Daniel and Isaac Bradley who were born in England and Aust. in the mid 1880's.
Hoping someone may be able to help me.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette! :*)

This is a story I found, it seems, about the rescue:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=CL18820519.2.5.2&srpos=7&e=-------10--1----0benvenue+bradley-all

... and this article mentions about the monument:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZTR19220527.2.39&srpos=1&e=-------10--1----0benvenue+bradley-all

This then lead me to find this awesome page about the monument:

p.s.

Think there's a good chance that this memorial is still there -- at least according to Google maps you can see a recent photo of it in the middle of Sophia Street, Timaru.

Hi Annette

Not crazy at all.   :)

Actually the wreck of the "Benvenue" 1882 at Timaru sprung to mind when I read your post (I too had  "rellie" who was involved in the rescue) and so I knew about the plaque.

EDIT:   Post amended ... I see info has since been provided.    :)

Hello again Annette

At the Timaru Cemeteries database, you will find photos of the headstone for Phillip and family.    [I suspect too that Isaac is also buried there ?]

Hi,

Must be something going round, as I have a "rellie" (by marriage) who assisted on the rescue also.

I only just found the info late last year, but isn't it great to have info like that to find  ;D

My sister lived in Timaru for years, must have walked past that monument in Sophia street for years and never knew.

Dear All.

I truly cannot believe it!!

How astounding is that?   I am just going to print everyting out and study everything.
When in NZ many years ago, my husband seeing a monument in the  main street of Timaru. Maybe this could have been the one.
I had not researched the Bradleys at that time.

My grandfather, Horace Morgan SOUTHAN was born in Timaru in 1877. His Mother was Martha Jane BRADLEY.
I understood that she only had 2 brothers, Daniel and
Isaac but according to the records there was a 3rd, Philip. I have so much to research!

Thankyou again for all your help, I cannot thank you enough
I am so excited.
Regards to all,
Annette

Hi Lu.

My goodness you have given me much food for thought.

Have never heard of the child Ann so this is interesting.

Many thanks,
Annette
