Hi

The London Gazette is a highly specialised newspaper

'The London Gazette’s historical position as the Official Newspaper of Record for the United Kingdom has enabled it to develop into a unique bank of information. It is a cross-governmental resource, bringing together data from numerous official sources and enabling users to cross-reference official information easily.
Information in the London Gazette is grouped into the following categories: State, Parliament, Ecclesiastical, Public Finance, Transport, Planning, Health, Environment, Water, Agriculture & Fisheries, Energy, Post & Telecom, Competition, Corporate Insolvency, Personal Insolvency, Companies & Financial Regulations, Partnerships, Societies Regulation, Personal Legal.'

see the history of the Surrey Advertiser here

http://www.newspaperdetectives.co.uk/surreyhisv2.htm

'The Surrey Advertiser was first printed on the 2nd of April 1864'.

see the previous post

Quote
The earliest Croydon local newspaper appears to be the The Croydon Chronicle and East Surrey Advertiser which started in 1855.

Hi

You would need to know the date of the death for a search in a newspaper. When you know that you could contact Croydon Local Studies and Archives about obtaining a copy of the newspaper report.
