Hi Thanks for the info Barbara I dont think this is him as he died in 1855 and he is not listed on Williams marriage as being Deceased.William was living at 16 Ashton Street which I got from his Marriage Entry, he married Sarah Pritchard in 1856 found her living at Tasle Alley in 1851.I think this is around the Deansgate area so was he living around this area? Have all the 1851 return be transcribed or are there some still not done.

Deansgate is one of the areas where the census was badly damaged, so you have to look at the 'unfilmed' sets that the family history society have done
http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/1851search.htm

I can see 2 William Stephens in Hulme district, and as Ive got the CD for that area, I'll have a look for the details.

1851 census for William Stephens

One of them was only four years old, the other was down as 23 so a bit too old, and not with father Samuel, but here he is anyway:

12 Arthur St Hulme
Elizabeth Sorby, wid. , housekeeper, age 30 b. Sheffield
Peter McCallum, unm., lodger, tailor, 37 b. Scotland
William Stephens, unm., lodger, Cook/confectioner, 23 b. Salford Lancs
Henry Stephens, unm. lodger, porter, 20 b. Hulme
Mary Stephens, unm., lodger, silk winder, 13 b. Rusholme

Was your chap a cook?

Hi He is listed on Cesus that I have as a Carter for Corporation so dont think this is him.Could you tell me how you trace a birth before 1837 as William was born before 1837 he not on civil registration if I could find this it might give some more information. Thanks for all your help.
