:)HI Dettori,
Thanks so much for all your help. You have the correct family. John Halligan travelled to the US in 1909 alone, his family stayed in Scotch Quay, Waterford (they are there for the 1911 census) Mary & 3 children travelled to the US to join Micheal in 1914 as you have found. I was really interested to find out how long they actually stayed in the US, as I kow they were back in Ireland in 1917 & was delighted to find that out. Can you confirm that both Micheal & Mary travelled back to Ireland in July1915 with their 4 children.
In the 1909 Ellis Island records (19th Sept 1909 on the Celtic) for Micheal Halligan it records that he was in the US previously in 1909 in New York. I have failed to find a record of his first entry. Have you any suggestions as to how I could follow this up?
Micheal calls himself a 'mariner' but his marriage cert from 1907 records hm as a 'shipwright' and other later documentation from 1930s states he is a 'ships carpenter'. The address that Mary Halligan gave on arival was that of her Micheal, her husband, as 288, Rector St., Perth Amboy. I have tried to follow this p, it appears to be on the harbour, so I presume there would have been work for a ships carpenter.
As for Patrick Phelan (Micheals uncle), I know his father was Micheal Phelan from Shambough, Co Kilkenny & he had a sister Anasatsia.
Thanks again for all your help, Moinear
