Hi again, just thought that as Micheal Halligan was a ships carpenter, maybe he entered the US & returned to Ireland working his passage. I find it hard to believe that he would have stayed in the US when his family left in 1915 as the reason for their return was because Micheals 2 brothers were drowned in a boating accident.  Is there anyway of checking a register of people working on ships???

My thoughts are that he went back and forward.  I was just looking at an entry for 3 Nov 1938. SS Harbledown. Liverpool via British Columbia to New York. A Michael Halligan is listed as a carpenter with 23 years service. The list was purely ship's crew.  ;D

HI dettori,

I think you are right.  He must have been at sea, over & back to the USA a number of times.

I found a newspaper clipping from 1932, that says that he was 'a seaman until recently on the Clyde Shipping Companys' SS Skerries, trading to Bristol.'

Do you have access to Clyde Shipping Company records?

Many thanks again,

No, sorry  - can't help with Clyde Shipping Co Records. and can't see anything to suggest. Clyde Shipping Co was founded in 1815. It operated a limited passenger service from Glasgow to Ireland, but mainly a cargo service around the coast of the UK. Before the end of the century a service was established to London.  Major routes were Liverpool - Waterford (Ireland)
Coastal service between UK and Irish ports (including Glasgow, London, Belfast, Cork, Plymouth, Southampton)
Between 1930 - 1945 - An improved trunk road between Glasgow and the west coast at Greenock took away some of the company`s trade. Their moorings at Greenock were closed. The business survived the Glasgow economic recession by taking advantage of cheap prices to buy more small boats. By the end of WW 2 in 1945 the companys sailings had diminshed because of the scarcity of coal.  ;D

Hi Moinear,

Michael Halligan was my great Grandfather on my Dad's side.  He was from Co. Kilkenny and married to Mary Quann from Waterford.  He was also a ships carpenter.  I think they had seven children two of which may have been born in the US. I will need to ask my Dad for more details.

Eireann.

Hello,

I am a grandaughter of Michael Halligan and Mary Quann from England.  Can I be of any help with any outstanding questions you might have?  My mum, Bridget, their daughter, says that her father was a ships carpenter in the merchant navy during both world wars.  In between he was a publican in Ballinlaw, co. Kilkenny.  Mum's eldest sister Eileen (now in her 101st year!) was definitely born in the US, I think the eldest brother Billy was too.  Joseph was, I think, born in Ballinlaw as were all the other Halligans, (there were 10 children in total).  My dad was one of 10 children as well so I can't even tell you how many first cousins I have!   ::)
