MORTIMER John Authur Burial in Marlingford
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 07:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

If anyone has access to the Marlingford Burial Index could you please look for John Arthur Mortimer born in 25/11/1872 in Marlingford and also baptised in 1872 (not sure of the exact date).  His parents are Robert Mortimer and Hannah Littleboy.

I can't find him on the 1881 census so wondering if he died before 1881.

Many thanks,
Leodis

You can check for post 1837 deaths youself on FreeBMD -
I cant see a death for this little guy though.

Perhaps he was visiting granny on census night.
Does he reappear on any later censuses?

Have you got Robt and Hannah on 1881? I cant see them either!

There is a 9 yr old John bn 1872 Marlingford, but with parents James and Annie at RG11 1954 107 5, but I expect you have spotted him.

The James and Ann one is at RG12 1533 86 4 in 1891 - just to rule him out.

But no other likely one on 1891 to be your one.

However - going back to 1871, just before the birth of John, I cant see a Robert and Hannah couple around that could be his parents ......

There is a Robert and Ann in Marlingford but they are in their 60's .....

BUT - just spotted that the Robert Mortimer / Hannah Little boy marriage was in LONDON

Marriage
Jul/Aug/Sep 1868
St Pancras 1b 37
Robert Mortimer / one of brides on same page Hannah Littleboy

so more than likely they werent in Marlingford (even if they brought baby son back there for christening - assuming it is the chr record you have seen for John Arthur.... or may be for her confinement if it is the birth cert.)

What is your source of John Arthur's dob and parentage?

Hi lizdb,

Thanks for doing all that work for me I really appreciate it.

Robert Mortimer b1846 Marlingford, and Hannah Littleboy b1843 East Tuddenham, got married in St. Pancras in 1868 and they had 3 children Pheobe Eliza b1869 in Kentish Town,  Edward George 1871 Kentish Town, and John Arthur born 25th November 1872 in Marlingford.

John Arthur was also baptised at Marlingford in 1872, but I'm not sure what date it was because I've lost my copy of the baptism page.

In 1874 Hannah Littleboy has another daughter Ellen born in Darlington and Ellen's father is John Ward.  This is taken from the 1881 census. So between 1872 and 1874, Robert Mortimer goes missing, and Hannah is with John Ward, I can't find a death for Robert Mortimer or a marriage to John Ward.

I found a death cert for John Arthur Ward:
Death Certificate Sub district of Darlington Counties of York and Durham No. 15
12th February 1874  Dalton Street, Darlington John Arthur Ward   Male  15 months Son of John Ward  -  Labourer Cause of death: Tabes Mesenterica - Certified Informants Name and residence: Catherine Wise present at death of Dalton Street, Darlington Registered on 12th February, 1874 Registrar: William Sewell - Deputy Registrar

I've always had my doubts about if this is the correct death cert, his age is about right but John Ward is a very common name.  So I was hoping to solve the puzzle by discovering is burial record and maybe some record of the missing Robert Mortimer.

Best wishes,
Leodis

I would imagine he is buried in Darlington in the name of John Ward

Is this the 1881 census yuo refer to?
RG11 3231 85 15

If so there are more children than just Ellen in addition to (Phoebe) Eliza and Edward.

Grantham Lincs

John Ward 36 Gas Stoker bn Norfolk Matchingford
Hannah 38 bn East Tuddenham
Eliza 11 bn St Pancras
Edward 10 bn St Pancras
Emily 4 bn Darlington
Letitia 2 bn Grantham
Ellen 5 bn Darlington

so John slotted between Edward and Ellen, and at that time it looks from the childrens places of birth that they were in Darlington when he was 15 mths old - so that death looks very likely.
The children obviously  took on John's surname and he took them on as his children.
But whether John and Hannah actually married - well I cant see it either!

1871 the family (Robt Mortimer, Hannah, Eliza and baby George Edward, are still in St Pancras)

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Many thanks for your help,
if there isn't a burial for him in Marlingford, he must be the child who died in Darlington.

Lesley
