Beauchief Abbey, Sheffield
« on: Monday 01 February 10 19:42 GMT (UK) »
I have just found an obitury notice regarding family for 1915 and there is a mention of a Mrs J J Smith from this place. I have googled it but cannot make much sense of what it is. Is it a convent?

Thankyou but I am still none the wiser. I wonder if she worked there as a servant?? Very weird as I have never seen her name pop up anyway in our lineage until I veiwed the obitury closer. I need to find a census for her and seek that way. Thankyou again.

Hello Kerbab.  I now see what you are on about.  Mrs J J Smith is Alice isn't it? John James wife.  I gave you the 1901 Census details.  They were farming at Beauchief Abbey  - or should I say the farmland around the Abbey - hence Beauchief Abbey Farm. (Remember I also sent you those other details by PM).
Even though he had died, she would probably still been known as John James wife Alice - if you see what I mean.
I don't know if they owned the land, but they would certainly have been either renting it or share farming - i.e. tenants

dee melody. NOW is my turn to have a wee senior moment. Off course....now I know who this is and you are so correct, this is Kenneths grandma, I forgot she remarried to John *penny drops*....thankyou thankyou. Oh and yes, it is Alice. Alice was married to Edward then he ended up in a lunatic asylum. She remarried to John James Smith in 1895. In the 1901 census I received John is still alive. He is recorded as being a Dairy farmer.  Awsum, I love the internet for filling in the pieces for genealogy.!!

In case you don't have them, three burials from the Beauchief Abbey church:

SMITH Duncan Gregory 20 Sep 1897 Beauchief Abbey Farm 5d
SMITH John Gregory Victor 21 Dec 1900 Beauchief Abbey Farm 3y
SMITH John James 14 Jun 1910 Beauchief Abbey Farm 59
[name/date of burial/address/age]

Can't see Alice though.
