70 ALMA RD. CLEWER
« on: Thursday 17 March 05 11:53 GMT (UK) »
Way back in 1934 I was born at 70 Alma Rd. Does anyone know whether it was a hospital at that time? I was wondering because my parents were living in Englefield Green, Surrey at the time.
Thanks.

Hi Bob,

There are three hospitals in this area of Windsor.  Two are private (Princess Christian - converted from large houses - and Princess Margaret - built within the last 30 years) and neither is really on Alma Road.

Then there is King Edward VII Hospital which was built sometime after 1906.  As long as I have known it (about 25 years), it has not had a maternity unit, but it may well have done in 1934.  However, it is not on Alma Road, but St. Leonards Road.

I have to go through the area in the next few days - if I have time, I'll check out where 70 Alma Road is and let you know.

Nell

Hi Nell,
Many thanks for the info. If it was in a hospital, suppose it would be King Edward VII. That's if St Leonards Rd is anywhere near Alma?
If you do get time, would appreciate check out of 70 Alma Rd.
Being in Oz makes it as bit awkward for me, and it's great that people will look up these things.
Regards,
Bob.

Hi Bob,

70 Alma Road is a large Victorian house, basement plus three floors including attic.  It is called Claremont House and is now serviced offices.  St Leonard's Road is virtually parallel to Alma Road but completely separate.  However, the end of both roads was obviously once very different.  Alma Road curved round to join Osborne Road with St Leonards Road (known as Spital Road in 1881) joining from the north.  This area has now been changed by development and changes in the road layout.  However, the name of the house at what is now No 70 was always Claremont House - it is carved into the stone lintel above the front door!  At the moment I can't find out anything about it's history.  :(

Hi Nell,
Many thanks for that. Knowing the name of the house could be very helpful. I'll try a Google search etc. May turn something up.
Regards,
Bob.

Park Corner dedworth is well west of Windsor ----a fair distance from Alma Road. It lies off CLewer Hill  Road where there is a pub called The Sebastopol.
You may be interested in the local forum website where you might find more information and pictures.

King Edward V11 Hospital was a small cottage hospital but I think most babies were born in the hospital in OLd Windsor which would have been nearer Egham. This was a lovely bulding which has now been made over to desirable residences.

Hi Jeannette,
Sorry for delay in replying. I did receive some photos of 70 Alma St nowadays, but couldn't find anything about the hospital in 30s and 40s. Maybe Alma and Almer are different locations?
Unfortunately I have lost the photos due to a computer fault some time ago.

Bob.
