Alexander Herd and Jean Dumbarland
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 16:15 GMT (UK) »
Any info regarding  Alexander Herd and his wife Jean Dumbarland would be greatly appreciated.
They had a daughter Jean born about 1805 who then married a James Mackie on 14th August 1824 in Carnbee, Fife.
Alexander and Jean are my great, great, great, great grandparents

This could be Alexander in 1841 Census living at Card's Wynd, Anstruther Easter, Fife:
Alexander Herd, 70. Occupation: Army P [could this mean pensioner?]. Born Fife
Jean Herd, 66, born England
Jean Thomson, 15, born Fife

I can't find anyone with the name of Dumbarland. Where did you get the name?
The only birth I can find for Jean Herd was 26 Apr 1795; chr 30 Apr 1795; parents: Alexander Herd and Jean Low. You probably have looked at this already. It seems to be the only J*n* Herd christened in Scotland between 1790 and 1810. Of course she may not have been christened.

Thanks for your info. I also thought from my research that Jean/Jane might have been born in England. The name Jean Dumbarland was given as the name of the mother of Jean Herd on her death certificate. I have viewed this certificate but have been unable to find any other helpful data.
Thanks again

Hi Bumble

I have very limited knowledge of Alexander Herd. But my Scottish ancestry is completely based in Fife and mostly in Crail.

Please feel free to contact me direct and we will see if we can see if there are any connections.
Alexander was born circa 1771 and died about 1847

A Thomas Herd in Largo married Marian Meldrum from West Anstruther in 1795. He is probably the Thomas Herd who was put on the poors' roll at Pittenweem in 1836 and allowed 1/6d (one shilling and sixpence) a week.

Marian Meldrum, also known as May, seems to have been a sister or half-sister of my 3 x great-grandfather John Meldrum.
