Hi Buckfuzby

Looks like RN uniform with boom defence rating, either 1st or 2nd class on right sleeve, and one good conduct stripe on left.

Finbar.

Actually with the Q under the gun he was a Gunnery Rating (Quarters).

Quote
Just a word here, however, on the various single letters which are added to certain badges. Take the gunnery branch for instance. An Able Seaman becomes, after passing a course in gunnery, first of all what used to be termed a "Seaman Gunner" but is now known as a Gunnery Rating Third Class. Depending upon the particular form of gunnery for which he shows aptitude, he wears a distinguishing letter beneath the horizontal gun-and-star of the Gunnery Rating Third Class. If he is adept at Fire Control, that is to say the handling of the instruments which make gunnery into an exact science, he wears a letter 'C' and is known as a Control Rating Third Class; if his bent is Anti-Aircraft Gunnery he wears an 'A'; if it is the laying and firing of a handworked gun he wears an 'L'; otherwise he wears a Q, as a Quarters Rating.

Dear Buckfuzby,

I am Jonathan Jee, only son of Bertha Eva Jee (nee Lucas). She was born 24 Aug 1920, in Cootehill, Cavan, daughter (seventh child of twelve) of John William Lucas and Frances nee Brown.

The photo must be of my Uncle Sidney, whom I met only once during 1968 or 1969, when he visited his eldest sister, my Auntie Madge, who lived in Strangford, Co. Down, N. Ireland.

My Mom married my Dad (Donald Breen Jee), an American soldier, whom she met during WWII. They were not married until 1950, however, and she came to the US in 1952. We were living in Strangford in the late 1960's, while my Dad (US Air Force) was in Vietnam.

Mom spoke of Sidney as having served in the Royal Navy. She said that he was on the Royal Oak and on some other ships that were torpedoed by German submarines.

After WWII, Sidney married (Mary ?) and had one daughter (brain cramps here). I was told that they lived in Yorkshire.

My younger sister and I can't figure out how we are related to you, but somehow we must be.

How are you kin to Sidney Lucas?
