Dewars and Scrimgeours of Logierait
« on: Friday 29 January 10 14:01 GMT (UK) »
I have recently confirmed that my 2 x Great Grandad was - James Dewar born 11 December 1828 Chapelton of Killiechassie, Logierait, Perthshire to Donald Dewar and Catherine Scrimgeour (various spellings of Scrimgeour) Catherine/Katharine was daughter of Alexander Scrimgeour of Tulloch of Pitnacree and Donald was a labourer in Chapeltown of Killiechassie. Donald and Catherine were married 26 Jan 1824 Logierait - I hold Old Parish Register copies.
James Dewar was a naughty boy and fathered two illegitemate children in 1859 - my Great Granny Christina Kennedy/Dewar in Feb 1859 and James Clark/Dewar 22 Dec 1859 before finally being "caught" by Helen McLaren whom he married on 27th Dec 1859 in Perth - he left for England shortly after!!!

Does anyone have any information on these families?  :P

 Hi Heather

I do recognize some of the names.  I am looking for Christian Scrimgeour details.  Her marriage to Charles Stewart in 1811, logierait, perthshire states her father as Alexander of Tulloch and just wondered if there could be a connection?  I can find a Christian Scymgoure born 1782 rhynd, perthshire, and her parents are Cicel Murray and Alexander Scymgoure, although I cannot find a marriage for them!

Thanks
Suz

Hello Heather.
My wife has a James Dewar born Chapelton, Killiechassie about 1831/2 as a direct ancestor.  It seems though that there may be more than one person of that name around those parts during those times.  This James Dewar married Mary Bruce 10th August 1950 in Dunkeld.  Mary died about 1859 and James married again Ann Stirling about 1860 in Dunblane.

If you have come across any reference to another James Dewar I would appreciate it if you would contact me.

Hi Heather,

I have recently started researching my family tree. I have been using Ancestry.co.uk and Scotlands People and I am quite certain that Donald Dewar and Catherine Scrimgeour are my great, great, great grandparents.

I had trouble going further back than my great grandfather on the Dewars side at first but having visited a couple of graveyards and researching online I think I have solved it.

My great grandfather was Alexander Dewar born in December 1867. I have found his registration of birth on Scotlands People and he was registered Alexander Clark Dewar. His mother was a Christina Dewar born 1840 from Logierait. His father was reputed to be a Peter Clark, there was apparently a court case that followed Alexanders birth to prove who the father was, I am still researching this but from what I can understand so far Alexander spent his childhood in the poorhouse at Logierait.

The James Dewar you mentioned was Christina's brother he fathered a child (James Clark Dewar) with Peter Clark's sister (Janet Clark) in 1859 as well as fathering your Great Granny that year before marrying a third woman the same year - yup! he was a "naughty boy" alright.

James and Christina had a sister called Isabella, she married a John Clark who was Janet and Peter's brother.

Some of what I have said has involved a degree of assumption so I am keeping an open mind until I find out more but it does look like my great great grandmother was your great great grandfathers sister.

I am having trouble finding out about Donald and Catherine and their parents, what you said in your post above is very helpful, any more info on them would be greatly appreciated?

Cheers

John
