Grandad Thompson Roches Buildings
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 20:21 GMT (UK) »
I'm still looking for my Grandad Andrew Thompson Born 1883.In the 1911 census he was 28 and lived in Roches Buildings Cork. Does anyone know where he was born and do I still having living relatives in Cork? My nans maiden name was Linehan and the family also lived in Roches buildings. He worked for the Cork Harbour Commisioners. Surely there must be someone in Cork. My nans brothers and sisters were John, Mary, Jerymiah, Michael, Margaret, Edward, Kate and Pat. But could someone do a look up for me for my Grandad. I don't know what area of Ireland he was born but I think there is some contact to Norway. Andrew Thompson 1883. Thanks

Is this Andrew and family on the 1911 census ?   Thompson family, Roches Buildings

if so, Andrew, his wife and children were all born in Cork city ... see the household return - Form A.

Andrew's occupation is 'Sailor (Merchant Service)'.

I believe Roche's Buildings are in Cork City, just north of the City centre

previous post on the same family for reference : Linehan/Thompson

Thank you for your reply. I have a copy of the census but I can't be sure that Grandad was actually born in Cork? I think I will only be sure if I get his birth certificate. Then I can identify his parents. Even then I presume there would be a few Andrew Thompsons born the same year. Thanks

do you have his marriage cert ?

that would show his fathers name, and help to establish the corrrect birth.

In case you have not already located Andrew and Ellen's marriage... this looks like a promising match from the Irish Civil Index on familysearch :

 Name: Andrew Thompson
 Registration district: Cork
 Record type: Marriage
quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1909
 Volume: 5 / Page: 80

 Name: Ellen Linehan
 [same index details]

You can order a research cert from the GRO using these references. See these links for notes on how to order the cert and the details included - see : Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon and Details included on a Marriage Cert

There are two quite close matches for Andrew's birth in Co. Cork around the right time that might be worth following up also - one in 1881, and the other in 1880.

Thank you so much that is very helpful. I think I will order the marraige certificate. It looks as if I will be the right one and I can gain information from it. Thanks
