Marriage Look Up: Gibson
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 20:01 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather married twice and I am trying to find out details of his first marriage, likely to have been in Belfast.

George Gibson married 'Maggie' (i assume margaret). George was born in 1893 and remarried in 1928 (So any time between 1910-1928). George's parents were George Gibson and Alice Devlin.  In 1928 George lived at 66 Bentham Street.

George & Maggie had two children George and John Gibson but i have no idea when they were born.  Maggie died of TB but I have no idea when.

A long shot given the information, but any help appreciated.

Hi,
I noticed on the 1911 census of Ireland that George Gibson aged 17, lived at house no. 66 Bentham St. the nephew of the head of house. I am not sure if I can help with the marriage but I have a George Gibson who married Margaret Anne Dobbin in St. Thomas Church Of Ireland, Shankill, Belfast on 25 Dec 1920.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Thanks that gives me something to go on [his second marriage was in the parish church in the parish of st Thomas].

I knew of the 1911 census, but the marriage details I have in the family for the first marriage are scant. Margaret must have died before 1928 - from your record do we know his/her birthdate or parents or how I could get a opy of the certificate?  Also,  is there any good resource for death records?

Thanks again

Index to civil registration is online and you can search for Margaret's death although it may be difficult to pick out the correct Margaret since you aren't sure of the date.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

The same index can be searched to get details needed to order marriage certificate (registration district, year/quarter, volume and page numbers).
Marriage certificate for that period will list age (in years) not exact birthdate or place, residence at time of marriage and father's name and occupation.

See here for ordering N.I. certificates.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
