Hello,
it won't offer much but his father's first name should be on the marriage certificate. Do you have that?

If you have the marriage certificate sometimes the witnesses can help to identify a web of connected people.

Is Michael working in Thelwall in 1871?

There is a John Niland (transcribed Wiland) 23 yrs with an Andrew Niland 19 yrs working in Lymm
1871 RG10; Piece: 3686; Folio: 285; Page: 18
They are both born Galway and with a group of workers from Galway.
Lymm and Thelwall are quite close so there may be a connection.

Hello again,

you have obviously done some research as you mention an alternative Michael who you must have come across somewhere.
Have you looked at Griffiths Valuation?
The parish of Dunmore has no Nilands but there is an Andrew Neiland and a Mary Neiland.

Hello Heywood

Thanks for your repley.

As yet I don't have the marriage certificate, but it is on my list of needs.
The 1871 cencus shows Michael working as a servant for a farmer called Hewitt In thelwall, Cheshire.
By 1878 he had moved on to Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
The parants of his wife Eleanor originate from Kilkenny, Ireland.
Thomas & Catherine Flinn, they also settled in Chesterfield. The 1881 cencus shows all of them residing at the Barleymow Inn, Saltergate.

Regards

Hello again,
yes I saw that - it would be useful to get that certificate- you would have a father's name at least to add to your tree and perhaps help with further research.
As I said, those other two Nilands so close to him may be related. Michael was also with another young man called McGloglin (or variation) and even that might be useful in the future - if he perhaps came from Galway.
best wishes

Hey, Hello.

I am from Dunmore, and am in the process of doing family research. As part of this, I frequently visit the National Liabrary of Ireland in Dublin where the Parish records of most parishes as stored on microfiche.

However, they are piecemeal, and in many places are illegible. For Dunmore, the only records are 1833 - 1846 (VERY readable, in fact a pleasure to read - I found a gggrandmother and a gggrandfather).
There are mostly illegible records for 1847 - 1854,and 1877 - 1880. In fact I get headaches trying to decipher some of the scribbles. Perhaps the Priest had taken to the bottle!!!
I am transcribing what can be read, unfortunately there is no system to ptint off records, or to copy them. Maybe someday.
I have not found any Nilands in my searches, but will keep my eyes open.

Chris
