Where did you find the following information?  Did you verify it?

Dugald > Archibald > James b 1777 > Archibald b 1755 > Robert b 1735 > Alexander b 1714

Haven't been able to get in black & white that Archibald was the father by documents but pretty sure it's accurate considering the naming conventions as listed previously.  I think Archibald b 1801 probably died in a coal mining accident.

Digging in with ChatGPT it's leading me down another path of

father: Alexander Laing
mother: Margaret Dougald

but states wife is Margaret Dougald which I came up with wife of Jessie (Janet) Thomson
