Yates/Topping
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 18:02 GMT (UK) »
I've found Norman Yates born on the Wirral in 1917.  If it's my father (middle name Parkes) his dob was 8th Oct 1917.   His mother is listed as Topping.

How can I find her first name(s) and her date of death, please?

There is this marriage

Sarah A Topping
William Yates
Sept quarter 1915
Prescot Lancs
8b 1279

But as Suz said, the use of the name Parkes must have come from somewhere in the family  :D

..and the birth reg you found (mother's maiden name Topping - has no middle name ??

There is a marriage FreeBMD
Dec qtr 1914
William Yates
Amy B Parkes

Your father's birth cert would have parents names
his marriage cert would give father's name

suz,

Yes, I'm sure you're right on track!  Parkes was my dad's mother's maiden name.  Doh!!  I should have twigged about the Topping misfit, although I didn't make the connection at the time.

The reason I didn't put parkes in the search was because I've been told that [sometimes] being too specific isn't a good thing as names are sometimes omitted on records (although, thinking about it, I guess that's more true for censuses than birth records).

Also Amy's death makes some sort of sense as my paternal grandmother was my dad's step mum.

Is there any way I can find the cause of Amy's death?  There was talk in the family about a fire but noone is really sure.

Thanks for all your help - it's been fantastic!!  This stuff is HARD!!  Well, for me, anyway.
