William Gillbanks of Red Sykes, Matterdale.
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am interested in any children of William Gillbanks of Red Sykes who married Mary Sowerby at Greystoke or Barton on 16/2/1747.
I would also be pleased if anybody could tell me the name of William's parents.
Would also like information on Gillbanks family of Penruddock.

The only thing I can assist you with is that the information you have is taken from the marriage licence/bond.
"1747 Feb 16
Gilbanks, William, Red Sykes in Matterdale p Graystock [Greystoke], single man
Sowerby, Mary, Murray [probably Murrah] p Graystock, spinster.
[Ceremony to take place at] Greystock or Barton"

The actual marriage ceremony is listed in the register of Barton, Westmorland.
A 1917 transcript by Rev. Henry Brierley published by the Cumberland & Westmorland  Antiquarian and Archaeology Society states -
"Will: Gilbanks Mary Sowerby ... ... 20 Feb 1747"

I can also tell you that many of the people who lived on the northern edge of Matterdale, like Red Sykes, attended Threlkeld church and not Matterdale.

I have a George Gillbanks born 1741 Threkeld father William. George married in Matterdale 1766 to Sarah Dawson. Wonder if this family is connected to yours?

Hi MatterdaleMan, thank you for the information regarding Threlkeld church, my story is a bit convoluted but I think there may be a link with the Red Sykes family, I believe it may be through Isaac Gillbanks born 1691 the son of Thomas Gillbanks of Red Sykes, who married Grace Vertue of Penruddock, at Greystoke 1685. Isaac along with his siblings Frances and John were born at Penruddock, Thomas died there1702. I have been unable to trace the children after their births but believe Isaac may have moved to the Furness area where he, and his descendants, used both Gillbanks and Banks surnames. As William lived at Red Sykes I presume he may be a close relative of Thomas'. As to proving a relationship, that would entail a possible yDNA test, if a proven descendant of William could be found to volunteer for such a test. I have already proved my relationship with another Gillbanks family in this way.
PS Is/was Red Sykes a farm or Hamlet, I can't find it on Google Earth?
Regards, Jim.

Hi Duckweed, It looks like George could be one of the people I am looking for, as the above post from MatterdaleMan says people from that area would attend Threlkeld Church, another area to research, thanks for responding, Regards, Jim.

Hi again MatterdaleMan, thanks for the link, have found them. It looks like Red Syke Farm was the family home, and when Thomas left to marry Grace Vertue, another brother? or close relative moved in, or took over the tenancy, possibly William's father. Further enquiries needed. Regards, Jim.

Hi Jimgillbanks, Duckweed

I can't answer the question, but we have Dawsons in Matterdale andI copied down loads of spare Dawson stuff from Cumbria Record stuff so I'll have a look.  It might not be early enough though.

Duckweed, do you have any more info on Sarah Dawson, please?

Best wishes
