Looking for ?Margaret? Jane Kendricks Hughes
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 09:59 GMT (UK) »
Morning everyone!  It's been about 5 years since I have been here on RootsChat, and I'm just as confused as ever.

With your help, I was able to get a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate (Mary Elizabeth HUGHES, born 14 July 1880 at Birch Hill, to Jane HUGHES, Domestic Servant, no father listed).

About 3 years after Gram was born, 'Nain' came to the USA and settled in the Chicago, IL area, and then Gram came over about 1897.  Now that I know 'Polly' was a HUGHES and not a BARRY (the name she used after she got to Chicago), I was able to find her immigration record.

BUT.... I have had no such luck with 'Nain'.  We believe she was born 1 April 1864 in Denbighshire area.  Her marriage certificate in 1902 to Richard John Jones, in PA, states that she was divorced in 1892 "due to drunkeness" and lists her name as JANE KENDRICK HUGHES.  SO WHERE do I find her birth certificate??  I find pages and pages of Jane Kendrick listed on the BMD BirthIndex, nor can I find where Jane Kendrick married a Hughes about 1878-1880.  At least she gave Gram what we believe a paternal last name MAYBE??? I need proof and I'm NOT having any luck.

Can you help??

Photo is Jane Kendrick Hughes Jones, gdaughter Jane Rosemary SHUMAN (dob: 21 Sep 1921), Richard John JONES, (second row) Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Barry (nee: Hughes) SHUMAN and husband, Lewis Fredrick SHUMAN.

Hi Marilou  :)

Birch Hill - is that the one in Llangollen?  I had a friend who lived there  :)

Have you tried the North Wales BMD for Nain?

I'll have a look to see if I can find anything.

The 1881 has a possible for Jane in Church Street, Llangollen. She is aged 19 and a general servant. Born Llangollen.

You can view a transcript of this on www.familysearch.org

I don't see Mary with her. Did she stay with relatives?

I see from your previous posts that you found Mary as adopted  by the Berry family in 1891:

RG12/4618/28/4

Sarah A Berry was born Llangollen. Have you followed her up at all? For example, when she and William Berry married.  It might give some leads.

William Berry was on the 1881 in Wrexham Abbot - unmarried:

RG11/5519/31/1

He married Sarah Ann Slawson Dec q, 1881, Wrexham RD

There is surely a link between Jane Hughes and this family. Most adoptions were either within the family or friends/neighbours in those days.
