Where do i Look? Holmes-Cameron
« on: Wednesday 16 March 05 18:23 GMT (UK) »
hi
am helping a friend trace her mother/grandmother and possibly other members of family
her mother and grandmother were called Isobella Holmes Cameron born c1886 and 1911 - both lived on the Isle of Bute
I can't find anyhting on them - cant even find my friend in any records Elizabeth Richie Cameron Born 1937 - can anyone suggest where to look for them (without paying too much/nothing!)?
Thanks

The only Isabella Holmes I could find on Scotlandspeople site was

1886    HOLMES    ISABELLA MCINTO       F    DALRY    AYR    587/00 0175

I believe the middle name is meant to be McIntosh.

The Ayr link is possible as a lot of ayrshire folk did move to Bute .. but I've done a wedding search up to 1929 and could not find any Holmes / Cameron weddings involving Isabella

on the 1891 census for Ayr I've found

Robert Holmes    Head   Ag Labourer   35
Jane Holmes    Wife         33
Janet Holmes    Daughter Scholar   13
Jane Holmes Daughter    Scholar   7
Isabella Holmes daughter      4
Euphemia Holmes            2

but I couldn't make out the address at all I'm afraid.

Holmes Cameron draws a blank on Scotlands People

Is* Cameron 1886 shows 22 listings in Scotland ,none for Bute and only 9 for the west of Scotland (7 of those in modern day Glasgow)

Is* Holmes throws up only the previous listings.

I would suggest that your friend applies for a copy of her own birth certificate if she doesn't already have one there should be some more information on there.

Ideally if she had her mothers birth certificate (or if she is deceased the death certificate) again more information would be available.

At the moment we would appear to be hitting the proverbial brick walls.

hi
thanks for reply
just phone my friend - she's got her mums birth certificate somewhere -she's 'digging it out' born 22 july 1911, her grand mother was 25(ish) when her mother born so c1886
Confirms that both her mother and gran weren't married, her mother was 'taken in' by another family (Hugh Mclean) and she herself was born out of wedlock
I've traced my own english history and there's no end of sites to look around and was confident that i would be able to find her mum/grandmum/other members as easy - but when i try tracing scots i've come to an abrupt halt - can even find my friend on any databases i've looked at!!
