Sheehan/Connell/Byrne from Ballyclough,Cork, Ireland
« on: Sunday 24 January 10 07:00 GMT (UK) »
My wife's gg grandfather David Sheehan was born in Ballyclough, Cork in 1818. He was the son of John Sheehan and Mary Connell. He married Ellen Byrne, from Cork, in Auckland, NZ in 1843. It is possible that Ellen also originated from Ballyclough. I believe he had a brother Daniel who also emigrated to NZ .

Is there anyone on this forum researching these families.

Thank you.

There is another site where there are five people looking for David Sheehan b 1818 two in particular are looking for David Sheehan born in Ballyclough.

Don't know if I am allowed to mention the site here, but I could send you a PM
with details.

I too am researching Sheehan's from Ballyclough. Tim Sheehan born about 1815, Michael Sheehan born about 1817, Elizabeth Sheehan (deaf ) born about 1812. To North America most likely Canada in 1846 then migrated South in to Cambria County, Pennsylvania by 1850. These Sheehan's appear to be cousins. They are not siblings because they do not share the same parentage.  Are any of these given names associated with David's family? I will look up Tim, Michael and Elizabeth's parents and respond again after returning home.

Thank you for replying Altoona Tom. My posting is all the information I have other than another brother called Denis and the possibility of a sister who both also came to NZ. All three of the names you mentioned have been used in following generations although I doubt there is any Irish family without a Michael. Would you know if there is census information available for Ireland in 1841?

Ballyclough is not very big now so in the 1840's I am sure all Sheehans there would be related.

Hi Neil,

As far as I know Neil there is not a census of Ireland specifically for the year 1841. There is of course Giffiths valuations which may be searched free of charge via the Internet at the site seen just below.

 http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

The only other reference I know of would be the 1826 Tithe lists but of course you would already be aware of both of these references.

Would you happen to know what the population of the parish of Ballyclough would have been in the 1845 time period?

BR,

Tom

Thanks Tom,

This is the first Irish research I have done so not a lot I can offer. I found this site but undecided as to value of it yet.

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=4&civilparish=Ballyclogh&citycounty=Cork

It does have Sheehan and Connell as some of the most used names in 1853 which is positive.

Neil, I live in knoxville, Tennessee now but was born in Pennsylvania. That's where my irish ancestor came to rest in America 1863.

You my friend are a long way from Ballyclough. I have a daughter who lives near Cork. On my last visit we drove by a road sign pointing to Ballyclough as we headed West on a shopping trip to Killarney. I was just think today of how on my next trip I need to actually go there and visit the place.

here's my e-mail Neil - > (*)   drop me a line and I'll send a few photos of the area where my daughter lives.
