Agnes Brogan - florist in Glasgow
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 13:49 GMT (UK) »
An aunt of mine was told as a young girl that Agnes Brogan of flower shop fame was a cousin of her father's (my grandfather). I would like to be able to prove or disprove this. The problem is that I know nothing about Agnes Brogan.

My grandfather's mother was a Brogan, so that is a good start, assuming Brogan was Agnes' maiden name and not a married name. I had a look in the Post Office directories at the Mitchell yesterday, and the first time the shop was listed was in the 1946-47 directory.

I am looking for advice as to how to go about this. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Hi
Bearing in mind the founder of the shop may still be living, you could try contacting the flower shop to see if they know the history of the place, more details on the founder etc.
The current owner is listed on a number of Glasgow florists' site.
Hoey, McLuskey - Scotland & Ireland. Eckersley, Rogerson - Lancashire. McGee - Ireland, Lancashire. Barnes - Bolton, Lancs

Skoosh, the Brogans I know of came from Co Down. My grandfather's mother was born in 1865 in Kilrea. She came to Glasgow with her family between 1871 and 1877. I am certainly not aware of a Birmingham connection in my branch.

Thanks greenpaula, I may just try that! Can't hurt to ask.

Hi, don't know if this will be much help but I've found this.

Mrs Agnes Brogan 164 Castle Street, Glasgow C4.  Her home address was listed as 22 Tilt Street, Riddrie, Glasgow E1.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Harrywrag! How are you doing? I couldn't remember whether the West Nile Street florist was part of the Agnes Brogan chain or not. I know that the one in Byres Road was at one point. The original address that I found in the 1946-47 directory was 164 Castle Street.

Thanks for that, Mhomac. 164 Castle Street was the original shop, so far as I can tell. I will keep the home address you have listed too. You never know when a detail will come in useful. Thank you very much. :)

My name is Andy, I was an apprentice butcher with "Alex Munro Butchers" 136 Castle st. Townhead, just across the road from "Agnes Brogan" flower shop. She was one of our customers and we saw her and her two sons every second day. She started her business by selling flowers outside Glasgow Infirmary and Stobhill Hospital from a basket, then progressed to open her shop in Castle st. I left Glasgow after 3.1/2 years in that shop to settle in Australia....1854. I am now a healthy 83 years old and I remember Mrs. Brogan very clearly....Also,  her two sons.  I am available if you wish to contact me......Good luck.
