Livingstones of Kidalton - famous connections

Greetings,

I am trying to trace the lineage of Donald Livingstone who was born circa 1803 - according to the 1851 Census in Kidalton.  Or 1806 according to the 1841 Census which just says Scotland. His occupation was colad miner/farmer.

He married Agnes Haddow in Hamilton in 1825 and emigrated to Australia with his young family in 1854. His children's names were Donald, Jean, James, Janet, John, Colin, Elizabeth.

It is believed that he is the second cousin of Dr David Livingstone but as I am unable to trace Donald's birth or baptism records am unable to go further back.

Any help or suggestions pls?

Have you been able to find Agnes' birth/bapt. yet? This would also help with naming, etc.

Agnes Haddow's Baptims record reads as follows:

31.7.1803

Haddow - Agnes, Daugther to John Haddow Coal_____?, Stevenstone and Jane Campbell born July 28th, bap 31.

Hi VH,

John Haddow and Jane Campbell had three daughters they named Agnes. Unfortunately the first two look to have died very young and the following daughter named in her memory. Your Agnes was born 6th August 1804 in Stevenston and christened the same day. I wonder if she wasn't expected to survive?

Scottish naming patterns are as follows:

1st son named after father's father
2nd son named after mother's father
3rd son named after father
1st daughter named after mother's mother
2nd daughter named after father's mother
3rd daughter named after mother

But sometimes they were only followed loosely (the patterns being exchanged, etc) or weren't followed at all.

Using Hume's naming pattern, maybe you could compare the children in Dr Livingstone's family with those in Donald Livingstone's family to see if there is a connection?

The link Hume gave you to the Livingstone site is a good one - lots of info there on the good doctor.

Does anyone know if the parish registers for Kidalton are complete?

Hi Diana,

I'm not familiar with what details Australian certificates have, but do you know if there's a death certificate available for Donald? If so, are there parents' names (or any other helpful details) that would assist finding his parents and siblings, etc.

I checked SP for his birth but I couldn't find anything. He and Agnes don't seem to have followed naming patterns strictly so I wouldn't put too much confidence in it. I would only guess (and I do stress that!) at Donald and Mary being his parents.
