OWENS
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 01:49 GMT (UK) »
We have traced ancestry back to Owen OWENS :-\, b 1746 - d 1808-1810.  He was born in Northern Wales and immigrated to Virginia, (America) when he was about 18.  He met Sophia on his voyage to America.  Does anyone have a suggestion about how to begin learning more about Owen Owens original locale?  Is there a source for passenger lists or ports from where he may have begun the trip to America?

You may be able to find something on here:

http://www.ellisisland.org/

There are also quite a few passenger lists on Ancestry.com/.co.uk

Ellis Island records are only from 1894. See www.castlegarden.org for earlier New York passenger lists. Early lists, if found, usually give only basic information- name, sex, age (not too reliable), occupation, country of origin.
If he settled in Virginia, Philadelphia and Baltimore are also possible ports of entry.

Added- Castle Garden records start 1820.

Thank you so much!  I will take a closer look at Philadelphia and Boston.  I am relatively certain that he did not come through New York.   :)

Boston not as likely as Baltimore. I'm not sure what records are online or even survive but probably very little from such an early date.
