Ryder
« on: Wednesday 20 January 10 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I have a James William RYDER (b 1873 Chelt, Glos / living 1911 Wolverhampton, Staffs / died during WW1) Not a lot to go on I know, but I'm hoping someone can help me trace his military records / death.
Looking on CGWC there are about 20 possibles. Ruling out quite a few by their age at death, the one that jumped out at me (mainly because of location) was:
J RYDER (42084) Sgt, Sth Staffs 2/6th, died 27.3.1918 buried Cabaret-Rouge cemetery, Souchez.

I don't know how I can find out anymore to see if this J Ryder is a good match.? From the date of death is he likely to have been one of the many casualties of Bullecourt - would the dead have been buried at Cabaret-Rouge?
Many thanks

Cant see any matches on Soldiers Died...do you have any other details?
Is it possible he was born somewhere else? also he may have died after discharge due to sickness or wounds and may have been missed by CWGC.
SDGW has ommissions.
42084 was John Ryder originally a Green Howard :(

Thanks for the reply
If that was a John not a James Ryder then it is definitely not mine.The info I have on James is accurate as far as it goes - born Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (about 1873 but could be a couple of years either side), living wolverhampton 1911 census.
As I said , on CWGC site there were a few J Ryder with age at death unknown that would be possibles, but not sure which one.
I am sure James died in WW1 - family story has it that when his wife Jessie was told of his death her hair turned white overnight (she had 2 young daughters by then, the second born 1911).
Really not sure where to go from here.    :-\

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry, but if you follow this link then you'll see that there may be a record for your James Ryder;

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=39&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=ms_f-39&gsfn=james&gsln=Ryder&_81004010=1873&msbpn__ftp=Gloucestershire&sbo=0

The same records are also available at the National Archives at Kew, where you will not have to pay to see them.
