your best bet is to search for anything you can locate in Scottish records (census returns, bmd certs, wills, old letters etc), to see if there is any mention of a more specific location ..

Rob,

The following link shows the number of Mullen households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1847-64.

Mullen Households 1847-64

My Great Grand Uncle Thomas Kavanagh married an Ellen Mullen of Dublin. Their second son born in 1878 was christen Christopher, so following the ‘Irish Naming Convention’ which I find very reliable, would suggest Ellen’s fathers name was Christopher. So that’s where I am at this moment!

Irish Naming Convention
The 1st son was usually named after the father's father
The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father
The 3rd son was usually named after the father
The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother
The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother
The 1st daughter was usually named after the mother's mother
The 2nd daughter was usually named after the father's mother
The 3rd daughter was usually named after the mother
The 4th daughter was usually named after the mother's eldest sister
The 5th daughter was usually named after the father's eldest sister

Hi John thanks for the info and link, hope this gives me a little more on family, Irish on my mothers side was  easier as had details, Doolittles Wicklow, but i did not realise how common Mullen was,i thought having Mullen -McQueen marriage would narrow it down a bit, Ive gone over all my certs in Scotland, again no luck in telling me were, just says born Ireland on most, and Parents were etc, so again thanks for any links and info, fingers crossed on this 1 lol ;)

Hi Rob,

Not sure it helps you any, just received marriage cert for Thomas Kavanagh and Ellen Mullen. Ellen’s father as I suspected is indeed Christopher and his occupation is carpenter. They were living in Jamestown in 1871.

Sorry I could not be of anymore help and good luck in your quest.

John
