Thomson Family
« on: Tuesday 19 January 10 03:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,
I'm writing from Canada,my mother was adopted and we recently found out who my great, great grandparents were. Thomas Thomson and Janet Stark were married in Libberton/Biggar in May 1851. They came to Canada soon after ,we're looking for any ancestors related to the Thomsons. I have posted a letter under "Lanarkshire" topic heading regarding the Starks so this will deal with the Thomson side of the family.
We found Thomas in the 1841 census in Libberton and  also in the 1851 Census, where it says he was 22 years old and born in Culter,Lanarkshire. We can't find any birth records for him. In his Obituary from here in Canada, where he died on Mar 8th,1917 in Harriston,Ontario his parents are listed as Thomas Thomson and Jane Cassells. We can't find any record of his parents as far as birth, marriage or death are concerned, they don't appear on the 1841 Census. We hired a Geneologist who found that a Thomas Thomson was added to the poor roll on Apr 30th,1839,appears his parents had died by this date.
We do know that my great Uncle,Russell Thomson, travelled from Canada in 1973 to Stornoway in Scotland. He went there to settle the estate of a cousin,Nelson Thomson, who is apparently buried in Stornoway. Nelson had moved to Scotland from Canada to live with cousins in Stornoway, eventualy getting his own house there. Russell travelled to Stornoway in 1973 then along with Nelson's parents,George Thomson & Martha Morrell. While settling Nelson's affairs in Stornoway they also visited relatives in Paisley, but we don't know their names.
We're hoping that someone from Stornoway will recognize Nelson's name,I've posted a letter in the Stornoway Gazette and am planning on publishing another letter in that newspaper.
We are planning a trip to Scotland this fall and hope to find   places to visit of our Ancestors,as well as any present day relatives.
                                                              Siobhan Beeton

Hello Siobhan

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

To begin,  I thought that I'd start with Nelson, so I've just checked the deaths for 1869-76 and can only find two male Thom*son deaths that are of an age that might fit. Neither in 1873:

1868 John in Stornoway aged 23
1872  Roderick in Barvas, aged 22

No sign of a Nelson and no Nelson death anywhere else in Scotland.  Might he have be called something else?

Ooops - big apologies , I see that it is 1973 not 1873  :-[

A Nelson Morrell Thomson died in Stornoway in 1982. He was 74. Is this him?

I would imagine that The Stornoway Gazette would have an obituary for him which might well list relatives.

Please note that to respect people's privacy, we can't mention the names of living people on Rootschat public boards so if I were to find anything about cousins, etc. I would have to send it to you in a private message (PM)

Hi Anne   Sorry, thought you'd seen the reply from Gadget saying he'd found a Nelson Morrell Thomson who died in 1982,aged 74. This has to be our Nelson,as the middle name is his mother's maiden name. My great aunt, who told us he died in 1973 must have the year wrong(she's in her late 80's)

Hi both

I found it on Scotlands People and it's too recent for online downloads. The cert has to be ordered via SP to find the date.

I'm up in Ullapool in a couple of weeks but I don't think the museum there will be open all the time at this time of  year to find out anything more.
