Stark Family
« on: Monday 18 January 10 23:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,
I live in Canada and we recently found out my great, great grandparents were from Scotland. Thomas Thomson and Janet Stark  were married in Libberton/Biggar in 1851,came to Canada soon after. Janet's parents were James Stark & Janet Barrie. James was born in 1779 in Carstairs,Lanark and died in 1864 in Parish Carnwath. Janet was born in 1785 and died in 1866 in Parish Carnwath. James parents were James Stark and Agnes Haddow, who had 2 other children,Agnes(born 1789) and Nelly(born 1767). Janet's parents were William Barrie(Barry) and Agnes Wier, who had 3 other children,Agnes(born 1771),Elisabeth(born 1797) and William(born 1792).
I've been trying to find the children of James and Janet, who are as follows:Agnes(born 1808),Helen(born 1810),Isobel(born 1829),John(born 1819),Thomas(born 1831) & William(born 1813). For example,I found a Thomas Stark on the 1881 British Census, aged 50,born in Lanarkshire. Unsure if he is the correct Thomas. I also found a William in the 1841 and 1851 Scottish Census and John in 1841 Scottish Census but still not 100% sure these are THE children. We did find Isabel Stark. In the Obituaries for both James and Janet Stark,a Thomas Bryce is listed as son-in-law under "Informant".I found a marriage record for Thomas Bryce and Isabel Stark,as well as the births of their children,John(born 1848) and Janet(born 1852) We have Thomas and Isabels' death records but can't find any further trace of their children,John and Janet.
We're looking for ANY further information, past or into the present on James Stark and Janet Barrie. We are planning a trip to Scotland this fall and would like to visit the home villages of our Ancestors, possibly any graves in parish churchyards etc. Plus if there are any other descendents of James and Janet ,and there must be,would love to meet.
                                                  Yours Truly,
                                            Siobhan Beeton

Hi,

I have Janet Stark (b1831) who was the daughter of James Stark (bc 1796)  & Mary Scott. James Stark was the son of William Stark & Margaret Paterson.

Do these names ring any bells for anyone?
Ramsay, Struthers, Stark (Avondale, Lanarkshire) Haughey, Martin (Ballyrashane) Neely, Fraser (Londonderry) Hill (Anderston, Glasgow), Cranstoun, Carruthers (Dumfries) MacIndoe (Springburn & Bridgeton, Glasgow) McKay (Springburn, Glasgow) Fraser (Paisley)

With reference to Ann Stark who married Thomas Cockburn, she was the youngest daughter of John Stark and Ann Todd, who were married in 1764 in Calton, Lanarkshire. The family was : Elizabeth and William (twins) christened by the Barony church, 1790, James, ch. 1793 Glasgow (cathedral), Margaret, ch. 1795 (Barony), John, ch. 1798 (Barony), and Ann, who was born 1802 in Calton, and christened into the Barony church in July, 1802. She died in 1854 and is buried in Cambuslang Churchyard. Out of interest, the twins gene has only resurfaced in the Cockburn family once, in 1928, with a boy and a girl.
I'm not sure that this is your Starks, but I hope it's of interest anyway.

Cheers, JC.

Hi JC,
Thanks for the info but I don't see a connection with Ann Stark. My great, great, great great grandfather James was born in 1779 and had only 2 sisters,Agnes and Nelly. Possible Ann is a cousin of his but no way to verify.

John Bryce, son of Thomas Bryce and Isabel Stark lived in Paisley.  He is listed in the 1911 census with wife Janet Bell.  He was a mason.

Has anyone found the parents of Thomas Bryce?  Trying to link him to my Bryce family who lived in Paisley and lived quite close to John Bryce.  Another family member actually bought the house belonging to John.
