trying to find birth record of Catherine Flaharty and timeline her before her marriage in 1878 to John Hegarty, Merthyr Tydfil.

in censuses she pops up in 1891 (Merthyr), and, I believe, in 1861 (Tredegar, 7yrs) with parents Daniel and Catherine. various ages recorded so dob around 1854-1857 probably Tredegar.

surprisingly can't find her in 1881 census with husband John (b. Ireland). Also can't find parents after 1861.

Second marriage for Daniel so Catherine's maiden name was Leary as per 1853 marriage on free bmd in Merthyr Tydfil

(1861 shows Catherine 32 and eldest child 19)

thank you so much for taking the time to help. I had spotted that Daniel was married twice - Catherine (1854c) being his only child, so far, by Catherine.

Both parents Daniel and Catherine, and daughter Catherine disappear after this until young Catherine pops up in 1891 married to John Hegarty.

Is this a possible death?

Daniel Flaharty age 57 Dec qtr 1867  Bedwelty Vol 11a Page 67

They were living in the Bedwelty reg district in 1861 and there is no other Daniel Flah** living there in 1861

 Yes this could be Daniel.

But still doesn't help in locating Catherine during the next 20 or so years.

And her birth doesn't seem to be anywhere either. I am really frustrated.

Her rom would confirm her parents details but won't help with tracking her early life.

Thanks anyway

Do you have her marriage cert to find out address at that time? Dec qtr 1878 Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a pg 599.

Their eldest child on the 1891 is Julia, birth reg

Julia Hegarty march qtr 1880 Bedwellty vol 11a pg 89

Can't see a Julia Hegarty in 1881, in the right place, but there is this family which matches for birth places and ages

6 Row 4 Rows Sirhowy RG11/5244 folio 102 pg 25
John Flaherty head mar 30 labourer in iron works b. ireland
Ellen wife 28 b. Tredegar
Julia dau 15 months b. Sirhowy
Ellen Flaherty 50 laundress b. Ireland

Julia's birth cert may show address for parents?

THanks osprey for your suggestions.

I think I need to purchase Catherine/Johns rom 1878 and Julia's rob in 1800 - as you say that will give me addresses which might fill the gaps.

Changing names through choice/spelling variants have been a problem here. Daughter Julia appears as Hegarty in birth index but as Hagerty in her marriage index.

I had spotted this other family in 1881 census but had discounted them because they were the wrong surname and wife was Ellen rather than Catherine.

Looking again - perhaps I was hasty. I suppose it could be that the wrong surname was given in error.

Would someone named Catherine be called Ellen by her family? Anything is possible ...... and as her mother was called Catherine Flaherty perhaps Ellen (50) is her mother - the 1861 census has mother Catherine at 32yrs... so in 1881 she would be 52yrs - close enough.

Could I be right?

I'll see what the records reveal.

many thanks
