It was through you, Ros, and the clue about his brother Jacob.  They were the ones you found in the 1851 census.  It just said Bedford as their birth county, so I looked up Jacob in 1861, then living in Kent.  He gave his place of birth as Potton. So I looked up Potton in Hugh Wallis' Batch Numbers and found the whole family.  Jacob's middle name was Miller, his grandmother's name I think. William Tear married Elizabeth Miller in 1790 at Potton.  In the 1861 census Jacob is shown as Jacob.M. Tear. By that census his father William had died (in 1856).  Richard and Jacob's mother was Judith Richards.
Can't confirm that William was the son of William and Elizabeth though as I can't find a baptism for him c.1792.
So thanks again for your help.  :)

Jacq. We are a Tear family living in Stoke. Richard Tear senior (1811 - 1899) was my great great grandfather. We have been researching details of his arrival in NZ. Coincidentally he is buried in St Barnabus Church in Stoke which we live close by to. We would be very interested in sharing on the Tear family.

Thanks for that John B. We have our Tear arm well documented up to Richard senior (immigrant from Potton, Bedfordshire). Have also learnt recently of his parents William and Judith Tear. Will be interested to learn where Jacq fits in.

Hi Folks
I found this thread by following a lead to Judith Richards. Does anyone know anything about her origins please?

Subsequent to Helen posting this message there have been developments on a connected thread at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=537571.new#new

Richard Tear senior (1811 - 1899) was my great great grandfather.

Piney, how sure are you about the birth in 1811, which was three years before William and Judith married? They baptised a Richard in Potton on 12 Feb 1818, with no indication that it was a late baptism
