Richard Tear of Stoke, Nelson
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 23:21 GMT (UK) »
I'd be grateful for any information on Richard Tear. The only facts I have about him is he married Isabella Bird sometime around 1855/56 and that he died on 7 Sept.1899 (from Papers Past).  This is a last resort before sending for his death certificate!  :)

Hi Jacq

Mmmm ... I think that as a marriage certificate of circa 1850's gives only minimal information, then the death record for Richard is a very worthwhile purchase.   :)    [A "printout" of the record (as opposed to a certificate), will offer additional information].

Have you checked the Nelson Early Settlers (online) database ?

Also I note there are records for the family on the LDS site.

Hi Jacq,

There are two small mentions of Richard Tear on the Papers Past site (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz). The first is from the Nelson Evening Mail in November 1891:

'Today in Chambers, before the Registrar Of the Supreme Court, on the motion of Mr Harley, letters of administration of the estate of George Tear, deceased, were granted to Richard Tear, next of kin.'

The second one is also from the Nelson Evening Mail in 1898:

'Lloyds Newspaper is inquiring on behalf of friends for "Richard Tear of Dalston, who went to Nelson about 1852; he thought of going to the Dunmore (sic) copper mines. Brother Jacob asks. No news since 1860." A Mr Richard Tear, a well-known resident, lives at present in Stoke.'

THe 1851 census has a Richard Tear living with his brother Jacob, father William and numerous other family members in St Leonard Shoreditch. This Richard was born in Bedford c1824.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Lu.  Yes, I did see his family on the LDS site. My ancestor was the unnamed female in 1857...typical!  I have also seen the other records you mention, and found them very interesting in regards to my other Nelson family, but not the Tears.
I went through Papers Past, Ros, and totally missed those references to Richard Tear!
Thanks heaps for that. I'll chase those up on Ancestry. Brother Jacob is a good clue.
Thanks very much both of you for your help and time.  I appreciate it.

Besides the two un-named children born 1857 and 1859, there are four named children showing on BMD born 1861 to 1870 with names including Richard and Isabella, so although parents names are not shown, it's most likely them. ??? ???

Richard jnr married Charlotte Matilda Thomas 1886, and looks like she had four children also, before death at age 32 in 1895.

Richard jnr died 1934 and both Richards are buried in Nelson.

Thank you, John.  Yes, they seem to be the only Tear family in Nelson. I do know the names of the two (as then) unnamed children.  There is quite a lot of information about them in Papers Past, but it's getting them one step further back to where Richard came from that's my problem.  Thanks for your help.

I've found him!  He was the son of William and Judith Tear of Potton, Bedfordshire.
Thank you so much for all your help.
