Boyd/Hepburn of Cambusnethan/Newmains
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 15:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody
Is there someone out there who can help me with my research on William Boyd and Janet  (Jane) Hepburn.
What I have  is Janet was born in Cambusnethan in 1815 daughter of James Hepburn and her mother Margaret Douglas.
Janet married William Boyd.  I do not have any information on him at all. All I know he is my Great great grandfather. Janet died at no. 9 Hope Street Newmains on 27th March 1868.
I would love more info of her husband William :-* :-*

Hello fancy nancy,

James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas were my GGGG Grand-parents through their daughter Margaret Hepburn (born 22 Oct 1813 Cambusnethan, married to Thomas Smith, died 03 Mar 1893 Whitestripe, Newmains). Sorry, I don't have any info on Janet and William Boyd. The only other info I have on James and Margaret is that he was a Coal Miner. Do you have anything on their births, marriage or deaths, or their ancestors?

Canisp.

Edit - Just found James Hepburn and Margaret Douglas married  on 29 Oct 1808 Cambusnethan, and had 6 daughters - Catharine 1809, Jean 1811, Margaret 1813, Janet 1815, Helen 1817 and Mary 1820. Any other children?
Paterson (Edinburgh before1840), Smith (Cambusnethan before 1861), Johnstone (Peeblesshire before 1800), Brown (Carnwath before 1825)
Turnbull, Hume, Whitecross, Aitchison (all East Lothian)
Walker (Bathgate before 1850), Lawson (Edinburgh before 1868), Ellis (Biggar, Cambusnethan and West Calder), Jamieson (Biggar before 1800), Cree (Biggar before 1800)
McConnell (Kirkcudbrightshire before 1854)

Since William is still alive at the time of Janet's death in 1868 I looked for him on the 1871 census...and here is the household at 14 Brow Street, in Cambusnethen as indexed on Ancestry

William Boyd, age 52, b. Cumbernauld, occ:  Furnance Keeper
Maria Bay Boyd, age 37, wife
Archabald Boyd, age 13, son
Jane Boyd, age 1, dau.
William Boyd, age17, son

which indicates that William had married again and had a child since 1868.  A search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for Mar* anything and William Boyd marriage turns up 7 possibles between 1868 and 1871 but there is only one that resembers the suname Bay....

1869   BOYD   WILLIAM   BOW   MARION   CARLUKE   /LANARK   629/00 0039

and sure enough this is your William....and the record will give you his parents names.  Now that you have him pinpointed in 1871 perhaps you can take the reins and find him on subsequent census returns and/or his death.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Nancy,

The 1841 Census for "North Muir, Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, both born in Lanarkshire -
John Glasford Boyd    5
James Boyd             1

The 1851 Census for "Woodhall, Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, all born in Cambusnethan -
John Boyd        14
James Boyd       10
George Boyd        9
Margaret Boyd     7
Robert Boyd        4
Catherine Boyd    1

The 1861 Census for "No18 Cambusnethan" shows William and "Jean" Boyd with the following children, all born in Cambusnethan -
James Boyd       20
George Boyd       18
Margt Boyd       16
Robt Boyd       13
Catherine Boyd   10
Wm Boyd                 9
Archd Boyd         2

Regarding the information on the Ancestry.com 1871 Census it has Jane Boyd age "1" but this is probably a mistake as it also lists her as a Scholar. As said elsewhere Jane was born in 1861.

Hi there,

I have plenty of info on William Boyd who married Jean/Jane Boyd.  He was my gt granddad x4 his Son George was my line on the tree.  I have been trying for years to work out who John Glasford boyd was, because When James was Born in 1840 he was listed as child one and George was child 2.  How much info can you share.
