Scott family Cavan

Help needed from anyone to trace my ancestors in Co Cavan!

My great grandmother was Margaret Olivia Scott born about 1855 in Co. Cavan. Her marriage certificate shows her father as John Scott farmer Co.Cavan but I have no further info re which village etc. and I cannot trace any birth or baptism records for her.

Family legend says she ran away with my g grandfather Martin Reid, a soldier in the Royal Artillery born in Dublin because her father did not approve the match. They subsequently married in Weymouth and went on to have twelve children.  Martin was RC and John Scott a protestant - hence I suppose the disapproval!

We also believe that either John or his father was a minister or preacher in the Protestant church in Ireland. John was still alive in 1890 when he went to see his daughter to try and persuade her to return

There are several John Scotts in Griffith's valuation but I cannot confirm any connection with them.

Any info re Margaret or John would be appreciated

Dont know if I can help but there are a few Scott ancestors in Cavan, Church of Ireland in my tree. Olivia is also a name that figures. I will see what I can find.

What were the names of the children of Martin and Margaret?

Did they remain in Weymouth

Have you got her death certificate, or any death notices, did they put her death in a paper it could say what townland she came from.

If Martin was in the army he would have had a army pension, his records might say were Margaret came from.

If Martin was RC and joined the Army and then married a protestant he would possible be disowned by his relatives, so would Margaret

How old was Martin?

You could try putting a note in some of the local papers around co cavan

My late grandma ran away with my late grandad and was not aloud to go back home that was in 1905 from townland Rathmore county donegal.

Don't know if this is useful but when my Mum was alive she had a painting by John Scott who was from Co Cavan. The painting is still around but has never been framed.
Something to add to my list!
