Hi
would anyone know how and where to search for a convict who is not on the archives website
I want to know where boys were sent in their first years when very young
I am going to Tassie and would like to hear from others that have done this

Hi Silky

Not sure if any records exist but here is some detail regarding young convicts to Tasmania.

 During the years of 1835 the first ever juvenile prison was establised. 3000 youths between 1835 and 1849 between the ages of 9 and 18 were sent to Point Peur in the hope of reforming them away from adult influences. Here they received basic training in trades to make them into useful citizens when they were freed. This is near Port Arthur and conducted tours are available when you visit us down here.

I will keep searching but perhaps somebody else can come up with a source for Point Peur records, maybe even the Tasmanian Archives.

What is the source of the information you have that identifies him as a convict in Tasmania.

I have just located a list of boys who were transported to Tasmania and held from 1884-1896 at the Female Factory, South Hobart which is where the female convicts were held.

Hello,
                 I suspect that these are boys who committed offences in Tasmania, rather than convicts transported. By 1884 transportation had long ceased in Tasmania. You could search the NLA beta newspaper for the name you have found among the juveniles list.
