Charles Dogherty/Mary Kelly--seeking birth and marriage records
« on: Friday 15 January 10 17:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello!!  I am new to this forum but it seems like it is populated with very helpful people.

My g-grandparents were Charles Doherty/Dogherty and Mary Kelly/Kelley (she was born c. 1838 and died in 1901 in Philadelphia.)  Their 6 children were born in County Mayo (Belgariff, Knockatinny, and Foxford district.)  I have found birth or baptism records for 5 of the 6 children, but I would love help determining when the parents married (probably in that 1840-1870 gap in the Toomore RC marriage records.)  The oldest surviving child was born in 1863.  Through the North Mayo Family History Centre I found only one Charles Doherty got married in Mayo in the time period 1859-1863 and it was not this marriage.

Also, any advice for me as to how to get the parents' birth records?  In my searching I found that ten Charles Doughertys were baptised in Ireland 1832-1837.  None in Mayo, 7 in Antrim, 1 in Louth, 1 in Sligo and 1 in Kildare.  Perhaps since Sligo is adjacent to Mayo, that might be the likely one?  Were there many births/baptisms that went unrecorded from that time period?

And lastly, I found a Charles Doherty who died at age 50 in 1883 in the Swinford workhouse, former residence Callow, occupation was landholder--I don't know if that was my g-grandfather, but the family story was that he died when my grandmother (his daughter Catherine who was born in 1877) was young.  (Although the story said he was hit by a train in England, I have not been able to find a death record for him in England.)  Is there any way to verify through workhouse records who the next of kin was for this Charles Doherty?

The family emigrated to Philadelphia, starting with the eldest daughters who found work, then followed by the mother and the youngest daughter (my grandmother.)  I have not yet found their immigration records.
Thanks for any help or advice!
