death lookup please FLANAGAN/McKINLEY/PRENTICE/LEADSAM
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 11:26 GMT (UK) »
hello all

I am having great difficulty locating the death of my 3 x Great grandmother, Margaret Flanagan.

Margaret Married Hugh McKinley somewhere in or around sydney, hugh was an irish convict who had received his certificate of freedom in 1834. i have not been able to locate a marriage record here. Hugh died in 1851 in Irishtown. (any information on burials in St James, Cumberland NSW welcome)
They had four children:
Michael McKinley - born around 1841, can not locate birth record but do have death cert in 1930 Yass NSW. he married Sarah Groocock and they had no children.
Frederick McKinley - born around 1842, can not locate birth record but do have marriage and death certs.
Patrick McKinley - born 2 aug 1847 Bankstown, have copy of birth register. can not narrow down death record.
Mary Ann McKinley - born 10 aug 1848 Bankstown, have copy of birth register. Married John Brogan 1867 Goulburn.

On Mary Ann's Marriage certificate Margaret is listed as a Leadsam along with Mary Ann's step father Thomas Leadsam.

I can only locate one Marriage record to match this information, Margaret Prentice married Thomas Leadsam in Kingston in 1861. I can not find a marriage of a flanagan or mckinley to a Prentice to maybe establish  if she was on to her third marriage by 1867.

I think her death record would answer quite of few questions in my family tree.

Annie, it's registered in NSW, reg district St George
1066/1861  Leadsam  Thomas to   Prentice Margaret, reg district;   St George

Following on from Annie's suggestion there is this death - do you know margaret's father's name?
11556/1885  Margaret LEDSAM, father George, mother unkown, reg West Maitland

There are a number of BMD entries for LEDSAM around Maitland

Sorry marriage to Thomas Leadsam was in Kingston NSW, so i assume that is Kingstown now. there are no parents listed for either party on the certificate.

I have no information on Margaret's parents. But i did start a bit of a tree following the Maitland Ledsams to no avail. The death of Margaret Ledsam in Maitland is Margaret Cusick (brought the certificate to find out it was not my relly).

As three of Margaret's children lived out their older years around goulburn i assume that she might have been around there too.

Hi Wallytat

If you have actual death dates for her children I am happy to have a look at the National Library in old Goulburn newspapers for obits etc.  Some of the country papers are wonderful sources of information. The marriage of Mary Ann may also be written up.

The thing is that I do need a date, at least the particular month, not just a year as it takes ages to trawl through a whole year's worth.

I'm a bit puzzled by the Leadsam/Prentice marriage as the index says it was registered in St George, which I assumed to be in the area just south of Sydney.  So is Kingston different?

Cheers, Judith

Sorry marriage to Thomas Leadsam was in Kingston NSW, so i assume that is Kingstown now.

Kingston NSW is in the Hunter Valley area, around Armidale.

But I believe there was a Kingston Parish - Newtown, St Peters area back then.

Edited to add:

Stanmore was named by a prosperous saddler, John Jones. He purchased land in 1835 where Newington College now stands and called it the Stanmore Estate. James named it after his Middlesex birthplace, a north London suburb. The current suburb of Stanmore is larger than the original estate and includes the area originally known as Kingston.

More about the old names of suburbs here:

Thanks Merlin, i think the Kingston Sydney is more probable, although Hugh McKinley was apparently assigned to R C Dillon at Wallalong House in Paterson district. so now i am not sure if it is hunter valley or sydney. Sydney has always made more sense to me, why would margaret live in Bankstown with Hugh go north to marry Thomas when at least three of her four children went SW to Goulburn.

Judith Thank you so much for your offer, the children's deaths were:
Mary Ann Brogan (nee McKinley) i do not have a death for, but her marriage was on 28 Aug 1867 in St Peter & Paul Cathedral Goulburn so maybe there is something listed in this month
Frederick McKinley died 27 Sep 1930 collector, near goulburn. Frederick married ELizabeth Groocock (many variations on the spelling) on 3 oct 1870 in Yass.
Micheal McKinley died 1 Jun 1930 Kirkdale near Yass. Michael married Sarah Groocock (elizabeths younger sister) on 7 sep 1874 Collector.
Patrick is hard to track down.

I do have a copy of Fredericks Obit but it does not list his parents. he had been in the collector district 64 years ie arrived Goulburn 1866.

Hi Wallytat,

I can confirm that the place named 'Paterson' is in the Hunter Valley area, it's a very historic town between Maitland & Barrington Tops.
