1st Devon Militia
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My 3x G Grandad James Hooper is on the 1803 Devon Militia list. I found this out via a website. I have subsequently found out through a baptism of one of his children in 1813 that his occupation is the 1st Devon Militia.

Would his enlistment state his place of birth and where would i be able to view his enlistment record please.

Ravelin

P.S.
Ancestry via this link has the 1st Devon Militia list 1803.

Hi Ravelin

Here is a link to researching the Militia - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=26&j=1

Unfortunately the oldest dates given, particularly for the attestation papers, are the oldest they have, and it is not the same for all regiments. Most are from the 1870s and later. The Militias came under the county then and not the War Office, so you should also look at local records.

The 1st Devon Militia became part of the Devonshire Regiment in the 1880s, and any records in Kew should be filed under that regiment, and 11th (their precedence number) in any series. Also, I am not certain of this, but I think the 1st Devon Militia were also known as the North Devon Militia and were based in Exeter. The 2nd/South Devon Militia being based in Plymouth.

That link takes you to a search page. When you enter his name you get nothing. You should find the page that gives his record and post that link.

Hello Ken

Thank you for the information and link you have provided me with.

Yes i have subsequently found out that the 1st Devon Militia were based in Exeter. My James lived in Exeter. If i get no joy via the National Archives website i guess i will need to look at the local records as you say.

Hello Ravelin
We might be related. Mt James Hooper was a Quarter Master Sgt - Royal Marines - Band Master 1841 in the East Stonehouse Barracks in Plymouth. His second wife is Kitty Farthing and his first wife was Elizabeth. El died in before 1824. James was born in 1778, Shepton Mallet, Somerset and died as a Greenwich Pensioner at 2 Hoe Place, Plymouth, Devon. His wife Kitty died 1877 Ryde, Hampshire, Isle Of Wight and is buried in the Ryde Cemetery. George Farthing Hooper my 2nd Great Grandfather migrated to Victoria, Australia. Hope to hear from you

Hello Val

We have different James Hooper's.

My James Hooper is living with his wife Elizabeth and children in Exeter in the 1841 Census. His occupation at that time was a Sawyer. He was born in Devon about 1785.
