Ballynure book?
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 17:39 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with the book:  "Ballynure: History and Happenings in the villiage over the past Four Hundred Years" by Ernest McAlister Scott?

Just saw it at a website and am trying to locate a copy.  Thanks -

Cheers,
Terry

Thank you for your quick reply!

I went to the site you recommended, and it referred me to Newtownabbey Press.  They don't appear to have copies available at the moment, so I emailed them to find out when they might be ready.

If anyone here has a copy, I'd be interested in learning if there are any references to Ballynure families.

My Ballynure families are:  Ballantine, (Mc)Shannon, Forsythe, Woodside, Ritchie

Thank you again for your kind assistance.

Cheers,
Terry

May have connection to Woodsides although information is scarce at the moment.
Martha Isabella Woodside(?) born c1883 married John Gilmore and lived in Doagh. At least one child's birth certificate (found a few months ago) gives her maiden name as something besides Woodside but Woodsides were mentioned as being connected in some way and a son was named David Woodside Gilmore.
Can't find my notes at the moment but may be able to ask more about this tonight.

Hi Terry

I think you mean Newtownabbey Borough Council not Newtownabbey Press.

Also I think TheWhuttle is getting mixed up with Ernie's book about Straid which was published in 2008.

Iam not sure if there are any copies available of the ballynure book. They had to do a 3rd print run as the first 500 sold out in days.  If I hear of any available I will let you know.

Terry,

Ernie wrote the Ballynure book in conjunction with the late Archie REID, but was on his own for the one on Straid.

Simply contact the current Secretary of the society.
[Contact details are under the "Programme for 2010" heading at http://www.ollar.utvinternet.com/ currently.]

Cost was six squid all up last year.

Sorry, I can't look up any details.
[I re-gifted my copy this Christmas!]

Hi

I think you mean Archie Reid. He lived next door and his wife still does. I help her out with the Historical website when she need help.

Archie would have done the computer work, taken the photos and arranged the printing.
In his last few months he was able to write his final book 'Ballyclare, Doagh and Ballyeaston'.

Archie is sadly missed for his work to local history.

If i see Mrs Reid tomorrow I will ask her about Ernie's book on Ballynure.

Thanks John and Capt Jock!

Yes, it was "Newtownabbey Borough Council" - thanks for the correction.  I sent them an email and hope to hear something in the near future.  Thanks also for checking on the availability of the book.

My interest is in learning more about the area my ancestors lived in, and I'm hoping to learn more about the related families.  There's also an account of my 5th great-grandfather slipping out of the country "during a revolutionary period" in a barrel that I'm trying to research, but I'll make that a separate post.

Aghadowey -

Woodsides' show up in my family twice; my 5th great-grandfather William Ballantine married an Ann Woodside - then his grandson, Hugh married Agnes Woodside (1842-1933), the daughter of Abram (1817-1882) and Janet (Creighton/1822-1914) Woodside.  I believe Abram's father was Robert Woodside and his wife's name was Agness; but don't know anything else about them.

Thanks again for all the kind assistance; this is a great site - a masterful job by all -

Cheers,
Terry

Visited relatives last night but Woodside connection but still no more real explanation for Woodside connection. Martha Isabella Woodside born 1883 but married as Martha Isabella Park in 1909- eldest child born 1910 and birth certificate lists mother's name as Park.
