John and Jane Neill
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 19:08 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather was William Neill born 1831. I am looking for information on his parents John and Jane Neill, especially the marriage certificate. I have tried various sites to no avail. I think William might have been born in Derryaghy and he married a Frances Maxwell. They lived in Belfast.
Is there anyway I can get Williams birth certificate and any information about John and Jane Neill?

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for William. Your next step is to see if baptismal record might exist- do you know the family's religion?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

As far as I know it was Church of Ireland. So where do I get the information for the birth?
Thanks for taking the time to answer me.

First of all, have you got William and Frances's marriage details?  If not, they are available here
http://www.ancestryireland.com

for £4
William Neill, father John married 1854 Frances Maxwell.
In this you will find the church they were married in, father's names and occupations and names of witnesses.
IF you are sure they were from Derriaghy, then the C of I church records are held by PRONI, reference MIC1/5 and for a small fee, they will search for the baptism record for you (it was £15 last time I paid).  It's cheaper than the air fare!

Hi

I am also researching the Neill Family- in particular James Neill born circa 1800 Derriaghy. His daughter Ann Neill married John McConnell- they were my gggg grandparents, they married in 1849 in Lisburn Registry Office, both gave their place of residence to be Derriaghy. I wonder if there is a link to your William Neill?

My GGG Grandmother married James Neill on 6 March 1861 at Derriaghy Church. James farmed at Sleivenacloy. The farm subsequently passed to Mc Connell family ownership.

I have not been able to trace James. Perhaps he emigrated to Belfast or farther afield.

The girls name, my GGGM was Dorthea Lackey.

Hi Wessex

I am very interested in your post! The fact that the Neill farm became McConnell property indicates a strong link to my ancestors.

Incidentally, Anne's father was James Neill. The James Neill you mention could well have been a younger brother.

(ETA: Ive just found this marriage on family search and it gaves the date to be 6 March 1851, with James's father being James Neill. Seems highly likely that this was Ann's brother)

Do you have any further information on the farm or any of the family members involved?

Any info would be great
many thanks

The Neill/Mc Connell land is at Sleivenacloy townland. If you have Google Earth the nearest I can give you at this very moment is the Flowbog Road. I have a very early maps (1780 ish) of this land and have traced ownership through Neill, Mc Connell and lastly the Water Commisioners.

Interestingly the old field margins remain visable on GE which now now has a new detailed image and panoramic photos, In street view, taken along the road. I have attached 2 images that may help.

I will discuss the family side off site.

I will dig out the map for you. BTW the Niell land is detained in Griffiths Valuation.

All the best
