Veitch & Bryce - possible Peeblesshire connection

Dabinhand, thank you so much for contacting me.  It is disappointing to hear that there are records not on Scotlandspeople that could perhaps fill in the gaps on my Veitches and Bryces.  I have found many records that are pertinent to my other Scottish families there and believe they are the best site for ancestral records - certainly compared with others.  I will attempt to attach the record of Margaret Bryce d 1633.  I have already tried and failed so please bear with me.  Again, thanks for your interest.   

Think I will have to leave the attachment for tomorrow as am very tired now and not familiar with this site.   Julie

The last public hanging in Edinburgh was a Bryce who was hung in the High Street where' his uncle preceeded him. A brass plaque commemorates the event.
Unlikely to be your lot Julie but it just shows what might just be in store.

Thanks Skoosh.  Yes I know about the Bryce men who were hanged.  A great uncle was very embarrassed when, after hearing the story of the plaque and enquiring at the cafe now in the converted gaol, the waiter shouted out his request - about the Bryce murderers - in front of the diners.  My uncle left rather quickly. I have been in touch with a descendant of those men and I believe they came from around Balerno.

Have just joined RootsChat and I'm in Geraldton WA and I have Veitch relatives in Peeblesshire and my husband's Mother was an Erskine. Funny to see both names there.  We were in Peebles in June and its a beautiful place.

Hi Gayndah - Good to hear from you.  My Veitches were a fair way back.  Unfortunately for me the records just don't exist that would enable me to tell you more about them and where they originated.  I know a little of the Erskines but only have mine from around 1820 back a couple of generations in Midlothian and East Lothian. Nice day here in Perth today. We were in Scotland a couple of years ago and did a bit of walking in the footsteps of the ancestors.  Very interesting. Such pretty places.  Too cold for me tho.  I come from Brisbane originally.  Are you a Queenslander too? Have been in Perth WA for about 30 years now.

my husband's Mother was an Erskine. Funny to see both names there.  We were in Peebles in June and its a beautiful place.

The Erskines used to live at Venlaw Castle (now a hotel) in Peebles, which before that was Smithfield castle. http://venlaw.co.uk/p/3/History-of-Castle-Venlaw
The Erskines, the Hays (previous tenants at Smithfields) and the Earl of Weymess families have the right to be buried in the Cross Kirk in Peebles. The Hays are still buried there, the Erskine section is slightly overgrown.
