Smart Family from Kettle, Fifeshire
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 04:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am trying to find information on the birth of a James SMART who had married a Janet Younger in 1807 in Kettle, Fife. He died in 1838 and no mention was made of his parents. I checked ScotlandsPeople and located one possible, based on his age at death, being 65. This would give a birth date about 1773 or so.

If anyone has any other suggestions that might provide a stronger idea of who his parents were, I would be appreciative. I also thought, if anyone has access to monumental inscriptions for CoalTown or Kettle Parish in general, that may have him with his parents or siblings. The possible birth I located was in 1774 in Kettle, with parents of James Smart and Euphan Leslie.

Many thanks again.

Hi, he is not in the kettle MI's as far as I can see.
How did you get his death date?

the fife death index does not have further details (it does have the death) and there are no other 1838 deaths of james Smart /kettle (or anywhere else)

Hi Diddy,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did find James Smart in the OPR Deaths for 1838 in Kettle, Fife, died at age of 65. Going backwards, the only birth of a James Smart I could locate in the OPR's was for 1774 in Ceres, Fife. I noticed that he was already deceased in 1841 and that his latest child recorded was born between 1825-1828 in Kettle. Thus I narrowed the search and it fit in location and age.

I was hoping that maybe he was buried in the Kettle Burial Yard and may be with other family members.

Thank you for your help so far.

 :)

Hello,

My gt.gt grandfather was David Smart who was the son of James Smart & Janet Younger.   He m. Margaret Anderson in 1836 and they later came to Australia.  Their children were James, Euphemia, Janet & Agnes.  I too lean towards James & Euphemia as the parents of James m. Janet, because of the names of these first two children.

Do you know the order of the children of James & Janet?   If David was the eldest then we'd have to consider a David as the father of James, as per the naming pattern.  I've forgotten his birthdate as I haven't worked on the Smarts for years, but have his death cert so can easily look it up if necessary.

Would love to know how you both relate to James and Janet.

Forgot to mention that the only children I have for James Smart & Euphemia Leslie are Euphemia b. 1764, Robert b. 1766, and James b. 1774.

Cheers, Jemmie.

Hi Jemmie1,

I saw your replies and sorry I haven't responded sooner as I didn't receive any notification.  I am working on the Smart family that came to Australia as per your notes above, for a close friend whose maternal line links up to the Smart and Edmunds line in Victoria/NSW. Happy to provide anything additional and also welcome any info you care to offer.
