1841 look up please - Outteridge
« on: Tuesday 15 March 05 15:21 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help please?  I am looking for Stephen Outteridge in the 1841 census who I believe was a patient at St. Lukes Hospital, Old Street, Middlesex.  He would be 57/58 years old.  Many thanks.

Cannot find a St Lukes Hospital
There are 90 hospitals listed, none with the name St Lukes
the only one I came across in the district of St Lukes is the Hospital for poor French Protestants and their descendants and he was not there.
Sorry Cougar

Hi Cougar

I had an awful problem finding this hospital, eventually found it on an internet site.  www.mdx.ac.uk/www/study/4_13_TA.htm  which also has a picture of the hospital.  From this site I established the hospital closed in 1916, all remaining patients were either discharged home or transferred to other hospitals.  The second St. Lukes was funded by the St. Lukes charity and used part of the Middlesex Hospital.  The site of the old St. Luke's Hospital was sold to the Bank of England and was used as a printing works for Bank notes until 1958.

On the death certficate for Stephen Outteridge, it states 'St. Luke's Hospital, Old Street, Middlesex'.  From what I can find out the hospital was for mental illness and incurable diseases.

Hi Lindy Lou
Thanks for that info - will go back and try again under asylums - might have more luck.
Will also have a look at the website.  Unfortunately Middlesex covers an enormous area, so will see if I can narrow it down a bit for you.

Hi Found the asylum in Old St St. Lukes.
Ref is HO107 558 ED2 p 114/115/116
Unfortunately all it gives are initials for the inmates, no names, and parts of the pages are 'black' and unreadable.
Was not able to 'pick up' a S O, nor one aged around 57/58 with the right initials - but could have missed it in the unreadable parts.

Is stephen the one who married Susannah Laurence as I am yet to verify that  he is my Great x3 Grandad's Thomas Outteridge's father .
Susannah is in the cencus with Thomas & Henry but no sign of the father which would make sense if he as hospitalised??
