Would love to join in if it happened whilst I was over there in May but won't know my dates for a while yet.  Will be in Manchester but have no problem travelling to Liverpool.  Don't know Liverpool at all but hey it can't be that difficult if I get myself a map.  Albert Dock sounds alright.

I'm leaning towards Liverpool for a venue.

If you want to call in the archives, Manchester Central Library is likely to be starting its 3-year closure.

Liverpool Central Library is a very short walk from Lime Street Station, with only St George's Hall in between.

Both cities have lost huge areas of housing to Slum Clearance and the Luftwaffe. The homes of most of my relatives from either place have gone, though many of the churches they used survive.

St George's Hall is well worth a visit - I caught it last year when the floor was uncovered (the tiles are normally covered to protect them). If you've any black sheep from the area, they are likely to have heen tried in the courts at the ends of the building.

The bus station close by will get you to most parts of the city.

Other attractions with a vaguely genealogical theme -
  • Merseyside Maritime Museum (at Albert Dock)
  • International Slavery Museum (at Albert Dock)
  • Liverpool War Museum is in the bunker from which the Battle of the Atlantic was co-ordinated (I think this is the only place I've mentioned with a charge)

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

If we do Liverpool, all the above are fairly close together - the Cathedrals are at opposite ends of the same street... but for those who don't know Liverpool, I strongly suggest the Yellow Duckmarine at the Albert Dock - http://www.theyellowduckmarine.co.uk - as a starting point.

Well i can give a big thumbs up to ST. George hall & crown court. Was there last year.

Nearest watering hole if you are comming by train on lime street. I hit this place about 2pm last time i was there and err fink it was some where round midnight when i left :-[

[
This was take a few years back  when it was Called " DUCK TOURS"  Great fun and has to be done if you are ever comming to Liverpool.

And finally, the art gallery. I found it  much better than Manchester's and spent ages looking at this painting.
