Bermondsey/Deptford - EASTERBY

Is anyone researching Easterby in the Metropolitan Surrey/Metropolitan Kent area please?

I'm trying to find the burial(s) of John and Sarah Easterby whose last child Matilda was baptised at Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene in 1814 but whose birthplace on all census is Deptford.  I have been unable to find any burials that tie in for John and/or Sarah on ancestry.  There is a John in Clapham in 1823 but he is incorrect (I have a copy of his Will) and a Sarah in Shoreditch in 1857 but her husband was William.  I've been through all the marriages on ancestry and apart from being a witness to the marriage of a Joseph Easterby and Mary Easterby in Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene in 1794, John does not appear to have remarried.  There are other John Easterbys about but they do not appear to be the same person.

Unfortunately without a burial its difficult to work out whether i have the correct marriage - there is a John Easterby marrying a Sarah Lewis in Camberwell St Giles in 1800, and my John and Sarah's first child was born in Dec 1801 so its possible.  However Lewis is quite common so without an approximate age its a bit fruitless trying to find a baptism for her.

Also, I've checked ancestry for Deptford St Paul but none of the registers, before or after 1813, are on there which is strange since Deptford St Nicholas are.  While I could understand those from before 1813 possibly being missing, its strange the later ones are missing too.  May explain why I can't find them.  I can account for all the children apart from the eldest Eliza Elizabeth Easterby and no burials have been found before 1813 in Bermondsey either.  I hope perhaps they'll put them on with the next release.

Any help appreciated, they are an elusive lot!

John and Sarah Easterby's children were:

Eliza Elizabeth (1801-?)
Francis John (1806-1876)
Harriot (1809-1873)
Sarah (1811-1890)
Matilda Hopton (1814-1893)

If this is the same family you are researching, you may not be aware but John Easterby died in Sydney, Australia, in 1844 having been convicted of receiving stolen goods in August 1814 at Surrey Assizes and sentenced to 14 years transportation.  He served his 14 year sentence and received his ticket to leave in Aug 1828.  He doesn't appear to have re-married in Australia (what happened to Sarah I've yet to find out) but he died in the Benevolent Asylum in Sydney in Jan 1844.  In 1817 John petitioned the Governor for mitigation of sentence but it wasn't granted.  The signature on that document is almost identical to the one on the 1800 marriage entry to Sarah Lewis, suggesting that marriage was indeed the correct couple.

Sarah Easterby (1811-1890) was my 3xGreat Grandmother.

Sorry bit confused.  You start, under the heading of Bermondsey/Deptford, saying you are looking for the burials of John & Sarah Easterby.

In your second post you say that John Easterby died in Sydney, Australia in 1844 so presumably his burial will be there, not Bermondsey/Deptford as suggested by the heading?

Have I got that right?

Thank you for your response. I have Amelia Easterby marrying Thomas Wakefield at St Mary Stratford, Middlesex, in 1829. A witness was Mary Easterby. No idea of either of them before that. Unfortunately no parents' names given in the marriage register. Amelia died in 1839 (from memory - before the 1841 census, anyway). I have not been able to find any trace of her before her wedding. I haven't even found any Easterbys via DNA despite having two cousins on that line also test. My Amelia was born c1809 per her age at death. She had known children Amelia (my g grandmother), Thomas (disappeared after 1851 census), Emma (died as infant), and Ann (married brother of Amelia's husband). Would be very interested if you had found any reference to any of these in your research...

Unfortunately I've not come across those names in my research.  There aren't that many Easterbys about in the London area, I think its a Yorkshire name so more prevalent up there.  There seem to be a few pockets of them in London associated with specific families but not much else, if memory serves me correctly as its been a while since I've looked at that particular line.

Hi Smudwhisk - Matilda Hoptima Easterby (1814-1800) is my 3rd Great-Grandmother and I was very interested to see your post about her father being convicted of theft and sent to Australia. Through your post, I have been able to confirm that father John Easterby (1780-1884) was a Ropemaker, living at Jamaica Row at the time of Matilda's birth 23 May 1814. His conviction fits with the rope theft too.
Are you able to provide weblinks/resources that confirm any events in Australia? I'd love to learn more and to be able to view the signature that matches his marriage that you mentioned in an earlier post?

Matilda went on to be a Coffee House Keeper in Shoreditch, London but I'm unable to reveal details.
