Hi Pam
I believe we are related!
My great grandparents were James Fitzroy and Margaret Finlay.
Dad's mum was Margaret Fitzroy - I think she was sister to your g/g/grandfather John.
Hope I've got this right but I understand the  family inlcuded - John, Tom, Margaret (my grandmother, who died at a fairly young age), Lil, Cissie (who I remember slightly as she lived with us before her death) Mabel, Bob (who emigrated to USA) and George (also emigrated?).
Eva (from fitzroy line)  died some time ago: Madge- her sister also died very, very recently.
Tracing the Fitzroy chain is not easy, apart from the information relating to corn miller/grocer/farmer which you now know!
Perhaps we should make contact? My parents would be delighted to hear more about your family.
Judith.

Judith,

sounds like we are cousins. I sent a few private messages. Did you get them?  I would love to speak to you further.  Do you have a private email that I can send you me gedcom file on the Fitzroy's?  I am also going to search for pictures>

Where exactly are you located?  We are from Pittsburgh, PA.

Pam

Hi Pam

Sorry for delay - bit hectic at present. We have a new grand-daughter here (REbecca:born on a snowy Christmas - eve night!)   she is also a g/g/g/grandchild to James and Margaret.
Have been talking to mum re the Fitzroy connection. i got it slightly wrong - Mabel was next generation down from John etc.
Difficulty getting any information on the origins of George Fitzroy, James's father.
Mum says we have a photo of what is thought to be James.
Will be in touch again soon through posting and will then send personal message.

Judith

Judith,

Have you ever heard of any of the family being from Australia?  I have census records from Robert Fitzroy listing his father as being from Australia and his mother from County Down, Ireland.
That would make James Australian.  My father in law said that he thought one of the three brothers who came from Ireland to the U.S. went to Australia first and then to America.  we have never heard that James was born in Australia.

So you know anything about this?

Pam

Hi Pam
I'll ask Dad about this but I don't think he has any knowledge of the Australian 'dimension'.
However his mother Margaret (or Nan as she was known) was one of the younger siblings and contact between those who emigrated and those who stayed in the Killinchy area, was I expect hard to sustain in those days.
Mum stayed with us last week and brought some information -
From the baptisms recorded at Killinchy Presbyterian Church the following children of James and Margaret are identified;
Elizabeth (Lil) 9th April 1880; William James 18th Jan 1882; Sarah Coulter Fitzroy (Sis) 28th Jan 1885;
James 14th Feb 1888. THese I think are baptism dates rather than birth dates- but not sure.
THe older and the younger siblings are not recorded at Killinchy but Nan was married from James's home in  Belfast  so we think the the Fitzroys moved there at some point around turn of the century.
James' father George was listed as a coachman when James and Margaret were married at 2nd Comber Presbyterian Church on 8th June 1876. (Margaret's father John was a draper from Killinchy).
I wonder if that church would have baptism records of the older children of James and Margaret?
I noted on another family history site that a Laura Fitzroy Perry was looking for information on a Joseph Fitzroy born in Belfast around 1849 later moving to Wexford and then  emigrating to Ontario. Now , Joseph's father George was from Belfast. Can't help wondering if this could be another link.

All for just now
Judith

Judith,

Thanks for the Info!  I will see if I can search the church records to find the others listed.  I am thinking that these dates you provided could be baptismal records.

I will see what I can find on the Belfast -Ontario lead. I'll let you know what I find.

I am going to search for a new genealogy program as the one I am using now keeps losing information. As soon as you are able to reach me directly, let me know and I will send you what I have on your American cousins.

Sincerely,
Pam

I just came upon the Fitzroy/Finlay postings yesterday, albeit more than 2 years after they were originally posted!

My great grandfather was William James Finlay Fitzroy and his parents were James Fitzroy & Margaret Finlay from Killinchy.

William married a Margaret Jane Bell and they had 3 daughters, Gretta, Betty and Ida May (who was my grandmother).  At this time I believe William James worked as a joiner for Harland & Wolf in Belfast and I was always led to believe that he actually worked on the Titanic when it was being built.

My grandmother (Ida May) was born in 1921 in Clara Avenue in Belfast.  The family moved to Comber sometime thereafter.

I know my great great grandfather, William James Finlay Fitzroy, had several siblings but I know absolutely nothing about them and would be grateful if anyone has any information about the Fitzroy family.

Thanks.
