1st rule of Genealogy never assume anything , you need to prove it.

You need to find the births of these children, what dates as we looking for  ???

There is a birth of a Martha Stephens Wedlake b.March, q 1862 St Austell
5c - 155  :-\

Also a marriage of a Martha Wedlake, June q  1903 St. Austell 5c - 204  but other names on the page are Abel Babb and Ernest Albert Hooper   :-\

1901 Census shows Martha Wedlake was a widow, and her dau. Ellen Rowe was married.

Working back via census and BMD's it would seem that Martha was actually Martha William Stephens and married William Wedlake Mar.1858 St. Austell - looks like he may have died 1887.   Although shown on census as Ellen or Nellie the dau. Ellen was actually born as Louisa Ellen S. Wedlake Sept.1871 St. Austell and married William James Rowe Dec.1891 St. Austell as Louisa Eleanor Wedlake.

Thankyou for that info. Did find information on 1901 census. Then went back to 1891 census. How did you go about tracing other info, just learning and would like to do it myself and try to understand how all this information ties in. What ever I'm doing things don't tie up, or is there somewhere on this forum with an idiots guide.

Hi Bizzy B

There is a lot of advice given in the Beginners section here which should help and suggest you read these.   It can all be a bit bewildering when you first start but as Patrish advised, never assume anything.   One step at a time!

All I used here were the various census and the BMD (birth/marriage/death) indexes.    If you don't have access to the latter via a subscription package you can view them for free at:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

When you get 'stuck' you can, as you did here, post your query and fellow rootschatters will always help or advise.

Good luck.

Annette
