Downing, Hill Top Farm Handsworth
« on: Friday 08 January 10 14:58 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for some more info on this family who farmed Hill Top Farm in Handsworth. I have censuses of 1871 and 1881 showing George Downing farming here and then he dies in 1886. His son goes on to farm in Austry, nr Tamworth. I'm particularly interested in Georgina (George Snr's daughter who was born in 1851. I have a Georgina Downing's (never married?) death in 1915 in Aston, Birmingham. Not sure yet if she's the one.

She was unmarried and shown as 44 b Handsworth on the 1901 census - living with brother George and family in Staffs.  Birthyear out by 6yrs

I searched the the free 1911 index for  Georgina Downing b Handsworth - only one is shown as b 1860 living in West Brom

Same search but just using birthplace Staffordshire shows the same entry

Carole, just to let you know that I've now followed your lead and paid for the 1911 Household info and she's living with the family who were at Hill Top Farm COTTAGE in 1881, the Gilberts, in Somerset Rd Handsworth.
Thanks again!

I am also looking into the family who farmed "Hill Top" Farm in Handsworth. I have quite a lot of information about the Downing Family going back to John & Sarah who farmed in Smethwick who were Georgiana's great grandparents. If you are interested in sharing information, please say.

I would appreciate any information prior to George and Elizabeth Downing, both born in 1810 and farmed Hill Top Farm.

I am a direct descendent of them - my mother was a Downing. Her father, Herbert, was the son of William Anthony Downing who in turn was the son of a William Anthony Downing. The latter was the son of George Downing, as mentioned above.

I grew up in NZ - the younger of the William Anthonys emigrated to NZ at some point.

Anyway, any information would be much appreciated!

Hi Aaron,

My friend and I have compiled a large collection of information about the Downings including what we refer to as the "Hill Top" Downings including William Anthony who went to NZ. We have also been in touch with June who lives near ChristChurch as she has been doing a lot of research, too. I'm sure you must know her, she's married to George who is also a descendant.

As we have a lot of info I wonder if it would be best for you to contact me privately on (*)

If you don't wish to do that, I will try to send via this site.
