Thoms - Mervyns in Dublin (1900s)
« on: Friday 08 January 10 12:22 GMT (UK) »
Not sure if there will be anything but worth a shot!

Thoms look-up please...

William Mervyn, stone carver, 22.3 North Great Georges Street.
Patrick Mervyn, clerk, 22.3 North Great Georges Street.
Michael Mervyn, electrical engineer, 22.3 North Great Georges Street. All info from 1911 Census.

William, as far as I know, continued in his trade, Patrick went into the army and Michael was involved in the 1916 Rising before continuing his engineering work and getting involved with the TEEU and ICTU in his latter years. He also owned a shoe shop at No. 1 Berkeley Road, Dublin.

From the Electoral Lists for 1939-40, William, Patrick and Michael were living at No. 54, Bayview Avenue, North Strand, at that time.

Thanks.

I looked at Thoms 1911 onwards and at no time were the Mervyns referred to as occupants ,the premises stated either to be in tenements or later with other occupiers.(No.22 N.Great Georges St.)
For No. 54 Bayview Avenue from 1923-1951 P.J.Mervyn was stated to be the occupier. My next Thoms (for 1958) shows that he had gone.
While not in the 1934 edition , my next Thoms (1942) until 1962 (my last Thoms) shows that an M.Mervyn was the occupier of No.15 Ard Patrick Road.  Is this relevant?

I had a look into the Berkeley Road / shoe shop connection - and it does not seem that no. 1 was ever a shoe shop.. from the late 1930s to the 60s (at least) its a tobacconist named Lacey.

There is a possible link at number 4 Berkeley Road, as there is a boot repairs business sharing that address from the 1938 (or poss. earlier).  Up to the late 1950s named J. Purdue and later named P. McGlynn.

Thanks Quaxer,

Yes, that is relevant. The Michael Mervyn mentioned lived on Ard Patrick Road for most or all of his married life. He was an electrical engineer and went on to have presidential positions in the TEEU and ICTU.

He's the one I know most about. The shoe shop it seems was actually at number 11 Berkeley Road, and I don't know if William Mervyn, the father of the boys, actually owned it or not.

From some online research, William Mervyn was a boot maker at 11 Berkeley Road in 1881 and 1894. There was also a John Mervyn of 4 Summer Hill Parade down as a shoe maker in 1894.

Thanks Shane,

I think my father might have got the numbers wrong. He always said number 1, but it looks like it might have been number 11. In the Slater's directory for 1881 and 1894 it has William Mervyn, 11 Berkeley Road, boot maker.

Apart from the shoe-making, I probably won't be able to find anything about William Mervyn, the stone carver from 1911 census. It seems there were a lot of stone carvers about in 1911. He died in 1953 of pneumonia.

I'd say a trip to the Irish Life centre will sort me out!

I was just searching the 1900s .. looking through earlier Thom's for some of the addresses you mentioned :

1904

  11 Berkley Rd, Miss O'Brien - newsagent
                 Patrick Daffin - bootmaker

4 Summer Hill Parade, 4 Mervyn, John, bootmaker

1894

11 Berkley Rd, Mrs Dawson -milliner and haberdasher
                 William Mervyn, boot maker

4 Summer Hill Parade, 4 Mervin, John, bootmaker

1884

4 Berkley Rd, William Collins - boot maker

11 Berkley Rd, Dawson, Mrs. milliner and haberdasher,
                  Byrne, Thomas, plumber.

4 Summer Hill Parade, 4 Kelly, Thomas, bootmaker

There's a couple of mentions of the surname Mervyn on the IrishGenealogy website (http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html) - including a Marriage of   Josephine Mervyn in 1898 with an address at that Summer Hill Parade address.

p.s. my 1881 Slater's shows a Wm. Mervyn bootmaker at 69 Summer hill parade..not Berkley Rd

Thanks Shane,

Yeah, as far as I know, Josephine Mervyn was a daughter of my great great grandfather.

William Mervyn (born Dublin 1827) looks to have had five children - William Mervyn, Christopher Mervyn, John Mervyn, Margaret Mervyn and Josephine Mervyn.

I've got details from the 1911 census on Christopher and Margaret and the other Mervyns in Dublin at that time. I know of the others through the pilot familysearch site.

Interesting to know about the shoemakers, haberdashers in together. Must have been a good trade area around there at that time.

Any info please on Thomas Mervyn?

All I have is that Thomas Mervyn married Margaret Broderick in July 1888. He was living at 77 Innisfallen Parade, Dublin, the address of his parents William Mervyn and Bridget Dunne.

Might there be something in the Thoms on Thomas and William?

William is my great great grandfather. He had seven or eight kids, including William jnr, and he was father to the aforementioned William, Patrick and Michael.

David, Have you had any more findings on your family history? Just curious to what progress you have made.
